Broyles’ two-run home run sends the game to extras, Vierling’s RBI knock proves to be game winner
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Mizzou Baseball (18-10, 3-5 SEC) evened the weekend series at Blue Bell Park Saturday with a wild 3-2, 15-inning victory over No. 11 Texas A&M. The Tigers were down to their final out in the ninth inning, but sophomore OF Thomas Broyles stunned the Aggie fans with a game-tying two-run home run.
Extra innings was a battle of the bullpens, before sophomore 2B Mark Vierling finally broke through for Mizzou with an RBI single in the top of the 15th inning. Coach Bieser called to junior LHP TJ Sikkema to close out the game and he successfully did so by stranding a runner at third to clinch the Tiger victory.
Mizzou's pitching was simply magnificent Saturday, led by a career-high 9.0 innings from senior LHP Tyler LaPlante. Sophomore RHP Konnor Ash tossed a scoreless 10th, while sophomore RHP Ian Bedell recorded 4.0 shutout frames to earn the win.

Hear From Head Coach Steve Bieser
On Saturday's marathon at Blue Bell Park…
"Quite the game there. It had a little bit of everything in it. Great pitching performances from our staff. What can you say about (Thomas) Broyles coming off the bench there and delivering that big blow to send it to extra innings."
On the Tigers' team victory…
"It was. The thing that I really liked was that we had some opportunities and let them slip away. I didn't see heads drop and I saw guys continue to play hard. I knew that we were going to come out on top in this one."
On the team bouncing back after a heartbreaker Friday night…
"Yeah, that was a tough game last night. We won way more innings than the other team last night, but came out on the bottom. We gave away a couple runs here today and didn't play well when they picked up their runs, but we were able to bounce back. It takes big efforts from individuals and Broyles was able to get us back in the game. Then we outplayed them the rest of the way."
On LaPlante's outstanding start on the mound…
"What an outstanding performance from LaPlante. We bumped him up a day and had to pull in TJ (Sikkema) to close it out. LaPlante was just masterful today."
#MIZ Takeaways
- Saturday was Mizzou's longest game played thus far in 2019. The 15-inning affair is the longest Tiger game since a year ago, as they also battled in 15 innings versus Mississippi State (March 24, 2018).
- The past two years' 15-inning ballgames were the program's first-such contests since 2013. The Tigers fell to Florida in 15 innings at Taylor Stadium on April 20, 2013.
- Both of Mizzou's extra-inning contests in 2019 have occurred on its current five-game road trip in the Lone Star State. Today's marathon joined Tuesday's 12-inning victory at UTSA (March 26).
- Saturday marked the Tigers' second victory this year when trailing entering the ninth inning. It was the team's second-such triumph of the week, joining their come-from-behind victory Tuesday at UTSA (March 26). Entering this week, Mizzou was 0-9 in those situations.
- LaPlante's outstanding day on the bump established a new single-game career-high in innings pitched. His previous standard of 8.0 innings pitched was accomplished twice over his Tiger career, both coming in 2018.
- Bedell also reset his single-game career-high in innings pitched with 4.0 shutout frames Saturday against the Aggies. His four strikeouts also matched his single-game career-best.
- Sikkema's scoreless bottom of the 15th locked down his second save of the year and sixth of his career.
- Broyles' clutch two-out, game-tying two-run home run in the ninth inning was his first as a Tiger. He became the 12th individual with a home run this season for Mizzou.
- Junior UTIL Peter Zimmermann, senior 3B Paul Gomez, freshman OF Josh Holt Jr. and Vierling all finished with multi-hit days at the plate Saturday. Zimmermann and Gomez each have multi-hit efforts across both games to start their weekend series against the Aggies.
