Wood and McClendon post third place finishes, Santos sets school record
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Mizzou Track & Field recorded two bronze medals and scored in eight events on the final day of competition at the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark. Junior Kieran Wood (Cambridge, U.K.) and redshirt junior Jordan McClendon (Black Jack, Mo.) each received All-SEC honors with third-place finishes in the mile run and weight throw, respectively.
In the triple jump, freshman Mirieli Santos (Mato Grosso, Brazil) reset her own school record with a mark of 13.21m (43-4.25) in an eighth-place finish.
TEAM RESULTS
In the team race, the Mizzou women finished 10th after scoring 25 total points, while the men's team finished 12th with 17 points.
NOTABLE FINISHES
Wood, an All-SEC and NCAA All-Midwest Regional performer in cross country, continued his excellent debut season in the Black & Gold by recording a third place finish in the mile. Wood crossed the finish line at 4:04.05 for his first All-SEC finish in track & field. Earlier this season, Wood became the first Mizzou athlete to run a sub-four minute mile in the indoor season at the Husker Invitational (Feb. 2), as he clocked a 3:59.64.
McClendon also recorded her first All-SEC finish, as she finished third in the weight throw with a mark of 21.04m (69-0.5). McClendon will most likely have a chance to continue her season at the NCAA Indoor Championships, as her season-best mark of 21.76m (71-4.75) ranked 10th in the NCAA heading into the meet. For the men, redshirt senior Avery Carter (Lee Summit, Mo.) scored a point for the Tigers as he finished in eighth place with a throw of 20.45m (67-1.25).
In the triple jump, Santos scored a point for the Tigers as she finished eighth with a mark of 13.21m (43-4.25). She reset her own school record, as she surpassed her mark of 13.00m (42-8), which she set at the Tyson Invitational (Feb. 9). For the men, freshman Georgi Nachev (Yambol, Bulgaria) scored three points for the Tigers as he finished in sixth place with a jump of 15.41m (50-6.75).
Sophomore Jason Edwards (Eldon, Mo.) picked up two points as he finished seventh in the heptathlon with 4,161 points.
Redshirt sophomore Melissa Menghini (Fenton, Mo.) posted her highest individual finish at an SEC meet, as she scored five points for the Tigers with a fourth-place in the 3000m run at 9:33.57.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Brett Halter
"Our staff is proud of the investment, tenacity and grit of our teams. Both teams committed to improving their craft throughout the year and it showed this weekend in a world class competition. Many events went as we hoped as the rewriting of our record books indicate. Both teams welcomed the few setbacks we had over that last two days as learning opportunities that will make us stronger heading into the NCAA Championship and the outdoor season. We had more than 20 athletes competing in their first SEC Championship. They embodied Tiger Tough in an incomparable environment. We grew as a program this weekend."
UP NEXT
Mizzou will continue postseason competition at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala. on March 8-9. Entries for the meet will be announced in the upcoming week.
