"It was certainly an up and down day for us in tough conditions, as it was windy and rainy early on," said Head Coach Stephanie Priesmeyer. "The entire field struggled a little today with some big numbers. Noelle had a slow start, but caught fire on her finishing holes. She started to knock her irons close and take advantage of her length off the tee. Cherise (Otter) really had a strong start, and she wasn't as sharp down the stretch but scrapped really hard late and made some incredible saves. She is really close to putting it all together. I liked our mentality today on the course, we were patient and hung in there, and we're looking forward to two more days of competition," she said.
Highlights of the day for Mizzou's lineup:
#1 Noelle Beijer (Jr., Assendelft, The Netherlands) – 72 (E) – T-9th
Beijer shot an even-par 72 Friday, after she rebounded nicely from a double-bogey 7 on her opening hole, the par-5 7th hole … Beijer stood four-over after her first five holes, but caught fire down the stretch, as she birdied five of her final 10 holes, including red numbers on holes 15, 16, 18, 4 and 5 … Beijer was one-under on the back nine Friday and one-over on the front … Her birdie on the par-3 15th hole was one of only two on that hole in the 87-player field on Friday ... Beijer is carrying the honorary Folds of Honor golf bag in the tournament, and each hole she birdies raises money for FOH, in memory of former Mizzou ROTC member and 1st Lieutenant William Anthony Edens…For more information on how to pledge money to Folds of Honor based on Tiger birdies, please visit www.mutigers.com/foldsofhonor.
#2 Cherise Otter (Sr., Bloomington, Ind.) – 76 (+4) – T-31st
Otter had a great start Friday, as she birdied her first hole, the par-4 8th, when she stuck her approach shot to one foot from the hole, nearly knocking it in for an opening eagle … She followed that birdie with seven-straight pars, leaving her one-under through eight holes … She also birdied the par-4 18th hole, and carded no worse than a bogey on Friday.
#3 Sophia Yoemans (Fr., Red Wing, Minn.) – 77 (+5) – T-43rd
Yoemans also birdied her first hole on Friday, the par-4 8th, and she ended the day at five over par in the end, including a solid one-over 37 on the front nine … Yoemans had no worse than bogey in her opening round, and enters Saturday's play tied for 43rd overall.
#4 Bri Bolden (Fr., Mokena, Ill.) – 78 (+6) – T-55th
Bolden shot an opening-round 78 and stands tied for 55th individually after Friday's play … She carded one birdie on the day, registering a three on the par-4 14th hole … Bolden finished strongly, closing with four straight pars to end the day, and was just two over (38) on the front nine … She also had no worse than bogey on Friday.
#5 Julia Bower (So., Columbia, Mo.) – 90 (+18) – 87th
Bower's 90 on Friday left her in 87th place overall, and was highlighted by a birdie on the par-3 6th hole.
Day two will get underway with a shotgun start Saturday at 8:30 a.m. central time. The Tigers will play Saturday with Augusta, Nebraska and Texas Tech.
