Mizzou Travels to Lexington, Kentucky for conference championships
LEXINGTON, KY. - Mizzou Cross Country will begin postseason competition with the SEC Championships on Friday morning at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. The Tigers will send seven men and twelve women to the start line for the conference championship meet. The men will hit the course for their 8K race at 8:05 a.m. CT while the women will run the 6k race at 9:00 a.m. CT. For the first time ever, the SEC Cross Country Championships will be televised live on the SEC Network.
Both the men and the women are set to build off strong early season performances as both squads have collected a pair of team victories over the course of the 2019 campaign. The women have been spearheaded by junior Sarah Chapman (Maidenhead, England) and senior Jordyn Kleve (Urbandale, Iowa) who led the Tigers in their victory in the Gans Creek Classic and also paced the squad at the Nuttycombe Invitational. It was there in Madison, Wisconsin that the Mizzou women finished 20th out of 36 teams in one of the most competitive collegiate races in the nation.
On the men's side, senior Thomas George (Gloucester, England) has paced the Tigers with wins in two of his four races this season. George led the Tigers to a team victory in the Gans Creek Classic, edging SEC-foe Texas A&M by just two total team points. Four additional Missouri runners placed in the top-25 to secure the victory.
When the Tigers hit the course in Lexington on Friday morning, a familiar lineup of runners will take to the starting line for the men, including George, sophomore Oaklee Hauschild (Blue Springs, Mo.), redshirt freshman Victor Mugeche (Blue Springs, Mo.), sophomore Martin Prodanov (Plovidv, Bulgaria) and redshirt senior Michael Widmann (Naperville, Ill.).
On the women's side, the Tigers will be led by the tandem of Chapman and Kleve. The pair will be supported by a group that is looking to propel the Tigers up the final leaderboard. Freshman Jenna Schwartz (Waterloo, Ill.), senior Melissa Menghini (Fenton, Mo.) and freshman Ginger Murnieks (Lee's Summit, Mo.) will all look to contribute to Mizzou's team score. The Tigers have relied on their newcomers this season as Schwartz and Murnieks have both earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
