#ShowMe Mizzou Game Notes
MIZZOU CONTINUES FIVE-GAME HOMESTAND WITH TROY COMING OFF OF BYE WEEK
- Mizzou Football (3-1, 1-0 SEC) is fresh off of the first of its two bye weeks and welcomes Sun Belt Conference foe Troy to Memorial Stadium for a 3 p.m. kick this Saturday on SEC Network. The game is part of a five-game Mizzou homestand - its longest since 1908. The Tigers have won the first three games of the homestand and are coming off of a 34-14 win in their SEC opener vs. South Carolina on Sept. 21.
A DOMINANT STRETCH AT #THEZOU
- Coming into Saturday's game against Troy, Mizzou carries an impressive streak in tote. Dating back to Nov. 10, 2018, Mizzou has won its last five home games, doing so by a combined total of 193-49 (38.6-9.8 avg.).
- The streak is even more impressive when you look at the last four games. Mizzou's last four opponents at Faurot Field/Memorial Stadium have gone home wearing sound defeats, dating back to the home finale last year vs. Arkansas. In MU's last four home games against Arkansas, West Virginia, SEMO and South Carolina, the Tigers have dominated to the tune of a combined 160-to-21 on the scoreboard.
- Here's a breakdown of some key stats in those four contests:
| Date | Opponent | Result | MU Offense | Opp. Offense | MU Rush | Opp. Rush |
| 11-23-18 | Arkansas | W, 38-0 | 408 | 187 | 181 | 52 |
| 9-7-19 | W. Virginia | W, 38-7 | 382 | 171 | 232 | 30 |
| 9-14-19 | SEMO | W, 50-0 | 501 | 94 | 259 | 40 |
| 9-21-29 | S. Carolina | W, 34-14 | 421 | 271 | 194 | 16 |
| TOTALS | 160-21 | 1712 | 723 | 866 | 138 | |
| AVG. | 40.0-5.3 | 428.0 | 180.8 | 216.5 | 34.5 |
- There are plenty of telling stats above from Mizzou's last four home games, but the most staggering may be Mizzou's ability to slow the run, allowing just an incredible 34.5 yards per game on the ground. The Tigers are coming off of a performance during which they limited South Carolina to just 16 rushing yards - the fewest for the Gamecocks since Oct. 18, 2003, when they failed to gain a rushing yard against eventual national champion LSU.
SERIES VS. TROY
- Mizzou leads the all-time series with Troy, 2-1, with the two teams last meeting in the 2004 and 2005 seasons, splitting a home-and-home contract those two years. Troy won the series opener in 2004 at Troy, 24-14, despite the Tigers taking a 14-0 lead after the first quarter of play. The key moment in the game was a fluke-fumble recovery by Troy OL Junior Louissaint, who caught the fumble out of mid-air and raced 63 yards to tie the game at 14-14. That was part of the a 17-point second quarter that sunk the Tigers in that game.
- Mizzou got revenge a year later in 2005, winning 52-21 behind rushing touchdowns from four different players, along with 303 yards on the ground.
- The only other meeting between the two teams came in 2002, a 44-7 Mizzou win at Memorial Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT VS. SOUTH CAROLINA
- Mizzou Football opened its SEC schedule with a 34-14 win over South Carolina on Sept. 21 at Memorial Stadium. The Tigers scored 31+ points for the ninth-consecutive game and scored two defensive touchdowns for the first time since 2014, as senior S Ronnell Perkins set a school record with a 100-yard INT return in the third quarter.
- Perkins recorded his first career touchdown with a school-record 100-yard pick-six in the third quarter. It was Mizzou's second defensive TD of the game. Senior LB Cale Garrett recovered a fumble in the end zone in the first quarter to put Mizzou up 7-0, marking the first time since 2014 Mizzou scored on a fumble recovery and an interception return in the same game.
- With 88 rushing yards, junior RB Larry Rountree III moved into 11th-place on Mizzou's all-time rushing list with 2,294 yards.
- Senior QB Kelly Bryant completed 19-of-33 passes for 227 yards and two TDs on the day, while rushing for 77 yards on 11 attempts. Bryant was Mizzou's second-leading rusher of the day.
- RS junior TE Albert Okwuegbunam made three receptions for 19 yards and one TD, his fourth TD reception of the season and the 21st of his career.
- Mizzou recorded its first victory in an SEC opener since winning on the road against South Carolina on Sept. 27, 2014.
- The Tigers last victory in their SEC home opener also came against South Carolina on Oct. 3, 2015.
With the victory, the Tigers broke their four-game losing streak in conference openers. Mizzou is now 3-5 in Southeastern Conference openers since joining the league for the 2012 season.
#ZOUNOTES - Stats You Need to Know
- 9: The number of consecutive games that Mizzou has scored 31+ points, dating back to the 2018 season. That is the longest streak for Mizzou since a 14-game span from 2006-07.
- 32: Plays of 10 or more yards allowed by Mizzou's defense through four games. That's the SEC's fewest and the second-fewest allowed by any team that has played four games this season. Mizzou has allowed just eight plays of 20+ yards, third-best nationally.
- 5: Consecutive home games won by Mizzou dating back to last year's 33-28 win over Vanderbilt. In the Tigers' last four home games, they are outscoring opponents, 160-21 (40.0-5.3 average) and have allowed just 138 total rushing yards in those four games. In three home games this season, Mizzou has allowed just 86 total rushing yards (28.7 avg.).
- 17-7: Mizzou's record over its last 24 games, dating back to the midway point of the 2017 season. That record is fourth-best among SEC schools over their last 24 games (only Alabama, Georgia and LSU have better records) and it's the ninth-best mark in all of Power 5.
- 4: Defensive scores for Mizzou this season. That's the most in the nation. Mizzou has seven defensive TDs over the last 11 games, including four defensive TDs in the last three games.
- 58-0: Scoring margin for Mizzou in the first quarter this season. Over Mizzou's last eight games, that number improves to 74-7. The Tigers' red-hot defense has allowed just 129 total yards in the first quarter this season and has forced a three-and-out on each of its four opponents' opening drives this season.
- 14.7%: Mizzou's third down defense percentage over the last two games. Opponents converted just five of 34 third downs in that span.
IMPRESSIVE STREAK STARTING WITH 2017 SECOND HALF
- Mizzou's turnaround during the 2017 season is well documented as Barry Odom's team became just the 13th team in FBS to history to start 1-5 and make a bowl game. The Tigers were just the second SEC team to accomplish that feat and were the first team in SEC history to start league play 0-4 and finish 4-4.
- Looking back on that second-half turn-around, the 24 games since the start of the second half of 2017 have showed incredible progress for Coach Odom and his program, one that should paint a pretty vivid picture of where the team is headed.
- Mizzou is 17-7 over the last 24 games, tied for the SEC's fourth-best mark and the ninth-best mark in all of Power 5. Only Alabama (22-2), Georgia (19-5) and LSU (19-5) have better records than Mizzou over their last 24 games. Below is a look at the Power 5 ranks:
| Team | Wins | Losses |
| 1. Clemson | 23 | 1 |
| Ohio State | 23 | 1 |
| 3. Alabama | 22 | 2 |
| 4. Oklahoma | 21 | 3 |
| 5. Georgia | 19 | 5 |
| LSU | 19 | 5 |
| 7. Penn State | 18 | 6 |
| Wisconsin | 18 | 6 |
| 9. Mizzou | 17 | 7 |
- The other Power 5 teams that Mizzou is tied with at 17-7 are: Iowa, Texas, Washington, Washington State and Auburn.
DEFENSE IS STRAIGHT SALTY
- Mizzou's defense has been one of the Southeastern Conference's most pleasant surprises early in the 2019 season. The Tigers have been dominant on that side of the ball, especially since returning home to #TheZou, and the numbers support that. Below is a look at where Mizzou ranks nationally in several categories.
- Yards Per Pass: #3 (4.7)
- Yards Per Play: #3 (3.76)
- Total Defense: #3 (231.3)
- Passing Defense: #4 (135.5)
- Scoring Defense: #12 (14.5)
- Yards Per Rush: #23 (2.95)
- Rushing Defense: #23 (95.8)
- Mizzou is one of just five teams nationally to rank in the Top-23 in rushing defense, passing defense, total defense and scoring defense. The other four are Wisconsin, Iowa, Ohio State and UAB.
- Aside from the more traditional metrics above, Mizzou also rates highly in several other key defensive categories nationally:
- Defensive TDs: #1 (four)
- Team Passing Efficiency Defense: #2 (81.14)
- First Down Defense: #3 (48)
- Red Zone Defense: #4 (.571)
- Third Down Defense: #11 (.258)
STUFFING THE RUN
- One of the keys to Mizzou's dominant defense has been its ability to stuff the run. Mizzou has had three straight games holding the opponent to fewer than 50 yards rushing.
- This is the first time since 2009 that Mizzou has held three opponents in a single season below the 50-yard mark
- The Tigers have allowed just 86 total rushing yards over the last three games (28.7 per game).
DEFENSE FINDING PAY DIRT
- After scoring a pair of defensive TDs last time out vs. South Carolina, Mizzou now leads the nation with its four defensive scores.
- Mizzou has seven defensive TDs over the last 11 games, including four defensive TDs in the last three games.
- The current three-game streak is the first time since 2008 that Mizzou has had defensive scores in three straight games; Mizzou did so in the first three games of the 2008 season.
- Mizzou has forced seven TOs through four games (1.75/game). The Tigers had just 16 forced turnovers last year (1.23).
- Mizzou has 41 points off of turnovers this season (10.25 per game).
- Mizzou is one of just eight Power 5 teams to have two players with multiple INTs (Ronnell Perkins, Nick Bolton).
- Senior MLB Cale Garrett leads the team with his two defensive scores - a pick-six vs. SEMO and a fumble recovery in the end zone vs. South Carolina.
- Mizzou's four defensive scores on the year are already tied for the fourth-most in a single season in school history. The Tigers need two more defensive scores to tie the school record of six, set by the 2008 team. Below is a look:
• 6 – 2008 (6 INT)
• 5 – 2005 (3 INT / 2 FUM)
• 5 – 1998 (3 FUM / 2 INT)
• 4 – 2019 (3 INT / 1 FUM)
• 4 – 2014 (3 FUM / 1 INT)
• 4 – 1979 (2 FUM / 2 INT)
FAST STARTS FOR THE TIGERS
- Something to keep an eye on as Mizzou welcomes the Trojans to #TheZou Saturday is its ability to start fast this season. In four games, Mizzou is outscoring its opponents, 58-0, in the first quarter. Dating back to Nov. 10 of last season, that mark is 74-7 as Mizzou is dominating the first quarter of play over its last eight games (6-2 overall record in that span).
- Mizzou outscored Wyoming, 14-0, in the opening 15 minutes before taking a 10-0 lead over WVU in week two after the first. Mizzou then hung 27 points on SEMO during the first quarter of the shutout win. The Tigers took a 7-0 over South Carolina into the second quarter last time out.
- The Tigers' red-hot defense has given up just 129 total yards in the first quarter this season and has forced a three-and-out on each of its four opponents' opening drives this season. The defense also has a pair of first-quarter defensive scores during that span (Cale Garrett's fumble recovery vs. South Carolina and his pick-six vs. SEMO).
AN IMPRESSIVE OFFENSIVE STREAK
- As Mizzou gets set for Troy Saturday, it will do so with an impressive offensive streak in tote. After hanging 31 points on South Carolina, Mizzou has now scored at least 31 points in the last nine games. That is the longest such streak for Mizzou since doing so in 14 straight from Nov. 25, 2006 through Dec. 1, 2007. Below is a look:
• Sept. 21, 20189 vs. South Carolina - W, 31-14
• Sept. 14, 2019 vs. SEMO - W, 50-0
• Sept. 7, 2019 vs. WVU - W, 38-7
• Aug. 31, 2019 at Wyoming - L, 37-31
• Dec. 31, 2018 vs. Oklahoma State - L, 38-33
• Nov. 23, 2018 vs. Arkansas - W, 38-0
• Nov. 17, 2018 at Tennessee - W, 50-17
• Nov. 10, 2018 vs. Vanderbilt - W, 33-28
• Nov. 3, 2018 at Florida - W, 38-17 - Over that span, Mizzou is 7-2 overall while averaging 38.0 points per game.
ELITE COMPANY
- Through five weeks of college football, there are only five teams to rank among the nation's top-20 in both first down offense and first down defense, based on per-game average. The Tigers are tied for No. 2 nationally in first down defense, allowing just 48 first downs (12.0/game) - the SEC's top mark. On offense, Mizzou has 99 first downs, good for 24.8 per game. That's tied for 19th nationally.
- Mizzou ranks 11th nationally in third-down defense and is limiting opponents to just 5-of-34 on third down over the last two games (14.7%).
BACK TO GETTING SACKS
- The Mizzou defense has now recorded at least three sacks in three straight games for the first time since 2014 (against Toledo, UCF and South Carolina in the first three weeks of the season).
- Looking deeper into the last three games as Mizzou's defense has been putting up white hot numbers, one of the keys is clearly Mizzou's ability to force negative plays. In the last three games vs. West Virginia, SEMO and South Carolina, the Tigers have forced 26.0 negative plays (8.7 avg.) with 10.0 sacks in that span. Factor in Mizzou's seven turnovers forced during that span and the Tigers have 33 plays that were either negative yards or turnovers for the opposing offenses over he last three games.
- Opposing offenses have run 188 plays over the last three games with 33 either being a negative play or a turnover. That's a huge defensive win for Mizzou every 5.7 plays on average during that span (18 percent of the opponent's plays have been negative or turnovers in that span).
GARRETT IS SEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
- Mizzou Football senior MLB Cale Garrett was the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced Sept. 23. The senior captain led the way in another brilliant outing for Mizzou's much-improved defense, with nine tackles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown that keyed Mizzou's 34-14 SEC-opening win over South Carolina on Sept. 21.
Garrett is the second Mizzou player to earn a Defensive Player of the Week nod this season, joining sophomore LB Nick Bolton, who earned the distinction following Mizzou's week-two win over West Virginia. Dating back to last season when DT Jordan Elliott claimed the conference weekly honor to close the season, Mizzou won three of five SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors during those five weeks of play. - Garrett made a huge heads-up play in the first quarter of the South Carolina game with no score, when he alertly picked up a ball in the South Carolina end zone that had been ruled an incomplete forward pass initially. After he jumped on the ball, an instant replay review confirmed that Gamecock quarterback Ryan Hilinksi had thrown a backward pass, giving MU a 7-0 lead, and Garrett his second defensive touchdown of the season – matching the pick-six interception he ran back 27 yards against SEMO in week three.
- The Tiger defense was stout against Carolina, allowing just 271 yards of total offense, a week after the Gamecocks rolled up 459 yards against Alabama. Mizzou held Carolina to just 16 rushing yards on 24 attempts, including four sacks on the day.
- Garrett leads Mizzou with 37 tackles through four games. He is a preseason first-team All-SEC pick by multiple outlets and third-team preseason All-American by College Football News, and has been filling up the stat sheet during the first four weeks of action.
- On the year, Garrett leads the team and is 24th nationally with his 37 total tackles. His 23 solo tackles are the 13th-most nationally.
- In the season-opener vs. Wyoming, Garrett posted a team- and career-high 16 tackles, 12 of which were solo stops.
- Garrett's 16 tackles at Wyoming were the most for a Mizzou player since Kentrell Brothers had 17 on Oct. 17, 2015, at Georgia.
- Garrett is coming off of a 2018 season during which he led the team with 112 total tackles, the third-most of any returning SEC defender. Looking deeper at his stats, Garrett's 298 career tackles are the third-most of any Power 5 defender and are the fifth-most of any active FBS defender.
- While the traditional stats all look great for Garrett, he also jumps out on official game film. ProFootballFocus.com graded him as the SEC's top-returning linebacker this season after he made a staggering 93 percent of attempted tackles a year ago, fourth-best at any position in the SEC.
- Garrett's 298 career tackles rank 18th in program history. Should he produce at a rate similar to last season, Garrett would finish his storied Mizzou career with 378 career stops, good for sixth all-time at Mizzou, and two places higher than his current head coach Barry Odom. He is currently 18 back of Lynn Evans (1972-74) who had 16 tackles in his career.
RETURN GAME RETURNS TO FORM WITH RETURN OF FLOYD
- One of the keys to Mizzou's fast start this season has been the reemergence of Richaud Floyd as the team's primary punt returner. Heading into last year, Floyd was coming off of a 2017 season during which he had a pair of punt return TDs and entered 2018 as a preseason All-American at the punt return spot. Unfortunately, Floyd broke his leg during preseason camp and it took until late in 2018 for him to be ready to field punts again. In last season's penultimate regular season game at Tennessee, Floyd fielded a punt and was the victim of a targeting penalty that knocked him unconscious, and cost him the rest of the season with a concussion.
- Floyd's tough year led to Mizzou's punt return game struggling a year ago. The Tigers as a team averaged just 2.6 yards per return and had just 52 total return yards on the year without a score. The longest punt return a year ago was just 16 yards. Floyd returned just three punts on the year before his injury at Tennessee.
- Fast forward to this year with a healthy Floyd, and the Tigers have completely reversed their fortune in the punt return game. Floyd has 10 punt returns and has amassed 180 yards, averaging 18 yards per return. He has also added a 71-yard punt return TD, coming against SEMO in week three.
- Floyd is fourth nationally with his 18.0 yards/return average and he is tied atop the national ranks for punt return TDs.
- Through four games, Mizzou already has more than four times the punt return yards than it did a season ago.
PERKINS' NAME ETCHED INTO HISTORY BOOKS
- In Mizzou's last game vs. South Carolina, senior S Ronnell Perkins made a play that put him in Mizzou's history book, tallying a 100-yard pick-six touchdown to ice the game for the Tigers.
- His 100-yard INT return was just the seventh 100-yard scoring play in Mizzou history and the longest for an interception score in Mizzou history, topping Marcus King's 99-yard score against South Carolina in the 2005 Independence Bowl.
- Perkins score is the only 100-yard INT in school history as the other six were comprised of kick returns (four), and fumble recoveries (two). Below is a list of Mizzou's 100-yard scores:
• 11/30/63 vs. Kansas - Vince Turner (fumble)
• 10/16/71 vs. Oklahoma St. - Mike Fink (kick return)
• 12/23/72 vs. Arizona St. - Mike Fink (kick return)
• 10/30/76 vs. Oklahoma St. - Joe Stewart (kick return)
• 9/1/07 vs. Illinois - Pig Brown (fumble)
• 8/30/14 vs. SD State - Marcus Murphy (kick return)
• 9/21/19 vs. S. Carolina - Ronnell Perkins (INT return) - Perkins is tied for seventh nationally and leads the SEC with his pair of interceptions this season. He is the only player in the nation with 100 return yards on INTs this season.
SAFETIES COMING OFF STRONG PERFORMANCE
- This year, Mizzou's coaching staff tweaked its defensive scheme to feature a third 'hybrid' safety position that is a flex between the SAM linebacker and a nickleback. It was evident last time out vs. South Carolina that Mizzou's new scheme was very effective, and it has been all season as Mizzou boasts one of the nation's top defenses statistically. One of the areas that the scheme was evident vs. the Gamecoks was the play of the safeties, who combined for a huge day.
- We already touched on Ronnell Perkins' huge swing play in the game above, but he was just one Mizzou safety who had a big game Saturday as Joshuah Bledsoe and Tyree Gillespie looked like elite defenders against the Gamecocks, too.
- Bledsoe posted five tackles, 1.0 tackles for loss and two pass breakups in the game while Gillespie tallied 1.0 sack, two pass breakups and a QB hurry. Add in Perkins' pick-six and Khalil Oliver's pair of tackles and a pass breakup, the safeties had quite the impressive outing. Below is a look:
- 8 tackles | 1.0 Sack | 2,0 TFLs | 5 PBUs | 1 INT | 1 QBH
- Coach Odom talked during training camp that Bledsoe and Gillespie had a chance to be one of the best safety combinations to ever play at Mizzou. The last three weeks of play for that duo are beginning to give glimpses as to why he though that.
TREY, WELCOME TO CLUB 2,000
- Junior RB Larry Rountree III entered elite company during Mizzou's week two game vs. West Virginia. He posted 104 yards on the ground, moving his career rushing total to 2,064, becoming the 18th player in program history to eclipse the 2,000-yard mark.
- Needing just 28 games to move past the 2,000-yard mark, Rountree is the fastest Tiger to ever accomplish that feat by games. He is averaging more than 76 yards per game in his career.
- He is the fourth-fastest Mizzou player to rush for 2,000 yards in a career, crossing the threshold on his 374th career carry. He trails only Damarea Crockett (334), Henry Josey (293) and Bob Steuber (281). Rountree's 1,919 yards coming into the season were the most-ever by a Mizzou RB in his first two years.
- Heading into Saturday's game, he has a realistic chance if he hits his career single-game average, to pass three more Tigers on the all-time rushing list. He sits just 63 yards back of James Wilder for 10th place. Below is a look:
| Rank. Player (years) | Yards | Total Carries |
| 8. Corby Jones (1995-98) (QB) | 2533 | 559 |
| 9. Ish Witter (2014-17) | 2418 | 503 |
| 10. James Wilder (1978-80) | 2357 | 487 |
| 11. Larry Rountree III (2017-19) | 2294 | 424 |
- Among active FBS players, Rountree's 2,294 yards rank 21st and ninth among non-seniors. Among active Power 5 players, his yardage total is 12th and only Vanderbilt's Ke'Shawn Vaughn ranks ahead of him in the SEC.
JAYJAY ALSO HITS 2,000 Yards
- The nation's best slot receiver may indeed play at Mizzou in senior Johnathon Johnson, known affectionately by his teammates and those around the program as JayJay.
- Heading into Saturday's game with Troy, Johnson's career total of 2,044 receiving yards is just 735 away from Mizzou's all-time career.
- With 52 yards vs. South Carolina last time out, Johnson moved over the 2,000-yard mark, becoming the 11th Mizzou player to accomplish that feat. That put him with some pretty elite company considering the likes of Jeremy Maclin,
- Danario Alexander and countless other WRs set the standard for receiving in the late 2000s at Mizzou. He currently sits No. 10 on Mizzou's all-time yards chart, an impressive feat considering all 10 other players ranked among Mizzou's top 11 played in the NFL.
- Below is a look at Mizzou's all-time career receiving yards chart:
| Career (by yardage) | Yds. | Rec. | TDs | Years |
| 1. Danario Alexander | 2778 | 191 | 22 | 2006-09 |
| 2. Justin Gage | 2704 | 200 | 18 | 1999-02 |
| 3. Chase Coffman (TE) | 2659 | 247 | 30 | 2005-08 |
| 4. J'Mon Moore | 2477 | 158 | 21 | 2014-17 |
| 5. Jeremy Maclin | 2315 | 182 | 22 | 2007-08 |
| 6. Martin Rucker (TE) | 2175 | 203 | 18 | 2004-07 |
| 7. Victor Bailey | 2144 | 128 | 12 | 1990-92 |
| 8. William Franklin | 2125 | 143 | 13 | 2004-07 |
| 9. T.J. Moe | 2101 | 188 | 11 | 2009-12 |
| 10. J. Johnson | 2044 | 141 | 13 | 2016-19 |
| 11. Emanuel Hall | 2016 | 97 | 16 | 2015-18 |
CLUB 2,000 MEMBERSHIP IS RATHER EXCLUSIVE
- Now that you know Mizzou has both a 2,000-yard rusher and a 2,000-yard receiver, we bet you're wondering how many Power 5 schools have one of both. Don't worry, we looked that up, too.
- Mizzou is one of just four Power 5 programs to have each, joining Oklahoma, Vanderbilt and Minnesota. Below is a list:
| School | Rusher | Rush Yds | Receiver | Receiving Yards |
| Oklahoma | Jalen Hurts | 2349 | CeeDee Lamb | 2194 |
| Vanderbilt | Ke'Shawn Vaughn | 2529 | Kalija Lipscomb | 2019 |
| Mizzou | Larry Rountree | 2294 | Johnathon Johnson | 2044 |
| Minnesota | Rodney Smith | 3169 | Tyler Johnson | 2226 |
YES, HE McCANN DO IT ALL
- Senior K/P Tucker McCann left his imprint all over the game in Mizzou's dominating 50-0 win over Southeast Missouri last month, scoring 14 points, (including three field goals of 40 yards or more), while he averaged 55.4 yards on five punts (two inside 20-yardline, plus a career-long 62-yarder), and booted all nine kickoffs through the end zone for touchbacks.
- According to sports-reference.com, McCann became the first FBS player this century to average at least 50 yards per punt (minimum four punts), while making three field goals of 40 yards or more.
- His three field goals were good from 42, 44 and 52 yards, with the latter giving him three career kicks of 50 yards or more (third-most in MU history).
- McCann has been virtually automatic on kickoffs so far, as he leads the nation with a touchback percentage of 96.55% (28-of-29). He leads the nation in touchback percentage.
- 16th nationally in FGs per game – 1.75
- 41st in punting
- Only Power 5 player to ranked in the top-50 in touchback %, field goals per game and punting average
- 20th in scoring – 9.8/game
- He ranks 12th nationally among kickers in scoring through four games (39 points).
- McCann has a shot at leaving his name all over the Mizzou record book. He enters week five with 315 career points, which is fourth on the MU chart, and 47 points behind the record of 362 set by former great Jeff Wolfert (2006-08).
- Against West Virginia, McCann passed Brad Smith (284 points from 2002-05) on Mizzou's all-time scoring list to rank third.
- With 52 career field goals (69 attempts), McCann is 14 behind record-holder Andrew Baggett (66 from 2012-15).
McCann made a 57-yarder in the final two minutes at South Carolina last season that gave MU a lead – it was the longest made field goal in the NCAA in 2018 by any kicker.
ALBERT O SCORING AT SCORCHING PACE
- Stop us if you've heard this before, but Mizzou RS junior TE Albert Okwuegbunam found the end zone multiple times in Mizzou's week-two win over West Virginia. He posted touchdown receptions of 26 and 16 yards, good for his 18th and 19th career touchdowns.
- A three-yard TD vs. SEMO moved Albert O into sole possession of fifth place in school history with 20 touchdowns and he added another last time out against South Carolina as he now has 21 career TDs.
- Keep in mind, he's tallied those 21 touchdowns in just 25 career games.
- Albert O is averaging a touchdown every 4.0receptions in his career. He has 10 catches this season and four have went for scores as his knack for finding the end zone is almost unprecedented at Mizzou. Below is a look at Mizzou's top five pass catchers ranked by number of touchdowns, and their reception-TD ratio.
| Player (years) | TDs | Receptions | Ratio |
| 1. Chase Coffman (2005-08)* | 30 | 247 | 8.2 |
| 2. Jeremy Maclin (2007-08) | 22 | 182 | 8.3 |
| Danario Alexander (2006-09) | 22 | 191 | 8.7 |
| 4. J'Mon Moore (2014-17) | 21 | 158 | 7.5 |
| 5. A. Okwuegbunam (2017-19)* | 21 | 82 | 4.0 |
- As you can see, Albert O is scoring touchdowns at an incredible pace. The next-best player among Mizzou's top all-time TD catchers is J'Mon Moore at one every 7.5 catches.
- In addition, Albert O now has six multiple-score games in his career as his performance vs. WVU was his first since housing three catches against Memphis on Oct. 20, 2018, vs. Memphis. His six multiple-touchdown games are the most-ever by a Mizzou TE, passing Chase Coffman who had five. Okwuegbunam tallied his six career multiple-TD performances in just 23 games. Coffman did his five in 50 career games.
- Expectations both inside and outside the program are big for Albert O in 2019 – he's been named a preseason first-team All-American by Sports Illustrated, College Football News, the Associated Press and Phil Steele and he also began the season on both the Mackey and Biletnikoff watch lists.
- His full name is Albert Chukwueneka Okwuegbunam, and the Nigerian translation of Okwuegbunam means "Evil cannot bring us down" while his middle name means "God has done wonderful for us."
MAMBA MENTALITY FOR MIZZOU'S KOBIE
- Mizzou junior DT Kobie Whiteside is coming off of arguably his top performance as a Tiger. Against South Carolina, he made three tackles in Mizzou's big 34-14 win to open SEC play, with two of those going for quarterback sacks, as the Tiger defense was dominant in the win.
- Whiteside had a career-high two sacks on the day (both in the fourth quarter), and was a big factor in Mizzou controlling the line of scrimmage all day long.
- According to ProFootballFocus.com, Whiteside has graded out at and incredible 85.0 for the year, third-best on the Tiger defense, trailing only LB Nick Bolton (90.3) and fellow interior DL Jordan Elliott (90.1).
ESPN'S FPI LOVES MIZZOU, TOO
- Through the first five weeks of play, Mizzou ranks 19th nationally in ESPN's Football Power Index, which is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season.
- FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule.
- The No. 19 ranking in the FPI is due in large part to Mizzou's No. 5 rank in defensive efficiency. That is the SEC's second-best mark behind Georgia (No. 4).
