FAYETTVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas (11-7, 2-4) defeated Mizzou (10-7, 1-4), 72-60, in a back-and-forth affair at Bud Walton Arena on Wednesday night. Mizzou sophomore guard Mark Smith put together one of the best games of his young career, totaling 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including a 6-of-11 clip from distance. The SEC's leader in three-point shooting (46.7 percent) set a career-high with six made threes and repeatedly ignited Mizzou's offense throughout the contest.
Smith's hot shooting to begin the ballgame pushed Mizzou out to a 12-2 lead but Arkansas rallied to pull within two at the break. After 18 minutes of hard-fought play in the second half, Arkansas was able to score 10 unanswered points late to close the game and seal the victory on its home court.
TURNING POINT
Smith kept Mizzou on pace with the Razorbacks during the second half. His corner three off of a dish from freshman guard Xavier Pinson at the 15:30 mark in the second half pulled the Tigers within one, making the score 43-42. Just over six minutes later, after an Arkansas run, Pinson found Smith again on a kick-out feed on the left wing and the sharpshooter splashed home a trey. Smith's fifth triple of the game pulled the Tigers within one once again, making the score 51-50 with 8:47 remaining.
With the Razorbacks holding a four-point lead near the five-minute mark, Smith hit again, giving him 22 points and six made threes in the contest. Smith's 22 points matched a career-high.
After a Kevin Puryear free throw brought Mizzou within one with 4:27 remaining, the Razorbacks went on a 10-0 run to take control during the game's closing minutes. Arkansas guard Isaiah Joe hit a pair of threes during the run on his way to a game-high 23 points.
