Rivera Finishes Second in Javelin at SEC Outdoor Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Mizzou Track & Field opened competition at the SEC Outdoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on Thursday, as redshirt sophomore Sophia Rivera (Brentwood, Mo.) posted a runner-up finish in the javelin.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Mizzou Track & Field opened competition at the SEC Outdoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on Thursday, as redshirt sophomore Sophia Rivera (Brentwood, Mo.) and redshirt junior Jordyn Kleve (Urbandale, Iowa) each scored for the Mizzou women. Rivera posted a runner-up finish in the javelin, while Kleve finished sixth in the 10,000m run.

TEAM SCORES

Rivera and Kleve's performance's netted Mizzou 11 team points on the initial day of the SEC meet. The Tigers currently sit in second place with two events completed. The Mizzou men have yet to score with three events completed.

NOTABLE FINISHES

Rivera held the lead in the javelin for the majority of the competition before the penultimate throw of the competition moved her to second place. Rivera posted a mark of 54.22m (177-11) with her third throw of the event to earn a runner-up finish, as she only trailed Auburn's Kylee Carter's mark of 55.26m (181-3). The throw was Rivera's second-best of the season, trailing only her school record mark of 55.75m (182-11), which she posted at the Mizzou Spring Open (April 6).

In the 10,000m run, Kleve finished sixth to score three points for Mizzou, as she crossed the finish line at 34:27.87. Kleve moved into Mizzou's top-10 list in the 10,000m run, as her time ranks seventh all-time.

In preliminary heats, Mizzou had two runners advance to finals heats on Saturday, as freshman Martin Prodanov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and redshirt sophomore Karina Liz (Aurora, Ill.) each advanced in the 800m run. Prodanov finished with the ninth-fastest time on the day at 1:50.46, while Liz finished with the third-fastest preliminary time at 2:06.46.

In the decathlon, sophomore Jason Edwards (Eldon, Mo.) sits in sixth place after five events with 3,592 points. Edwards posted personal best marks in the 100m dash (11.14), shot put (12.65m/41-6) and high jump (1.88m/6-2).

UP NEXT

Mizzou will continue with the second day of competition at the SEC Outdoor Championships on Friday. The day will begin with field events at Noon CT, followed by multi-events at 1:45 p.m. CT and finally track events at 6:00 p.m. CT.
