Five Tigers Grab Wins During Day One Action at Big 5 Challenge

FORT WORTH, Texas - Five Tigers picked up day one wins as the Mizzou tennis team opened action Thursday at the four-day Big 5 Challenge at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
TOP TIGERS
Three Tigers, junior Mackenzy Middlebrooks, sophomore Marta Oliveira and freshman Lisa Fukutoku, all nabbed wins Thursday to remain perfect during the fall season.
Middlebrooks earned a 6-3, 1-6, 11-9 three-set win over Nina Sorkin of Virginia Tech. So far all three of the junior's singles matches have gone to three sets this season, as she had two three-set wins last weekend at the Mizzou Invite.
Fukutoku easily put away TCU's Stevie Kennedy, 6-3, 6-0, for her third win in as many chances in her Tiger career. Additionally, Oliveira remained perfect after a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Dori Mesmer of Virginia Tech.
Also earning a victory Thursday was freshman Vivien Ábrahám, who posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Annie Clark of Virginia Tech.
Both junior Gabrielle Goldin and sophomore Ellie Wright went the distance in their matches but ultimately fell in 10-point tiebreaker third sets.
Additonally, Goldin and Oliveira posted a 6-2 doubles win over Notre Dame's Maeve Koscielski and Zoe Taylor in Mizzou's only doubles match of the day.

The Tigers continue play at the Big 5 Challenge Friday, Sept. 21 starting with doubles action at approximately 4:30 p.m.
