COLUMBIA, Mo. – A pair of Mizzou Athletics programs were honored Wednesday by the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) with Public Recognition Awards for their Academic Progress Rate (APR) during the 2016-17 academic year. Mizzou volleyball and women's tennis both registered perfect APR scores of 1,000 to earn honors for the third-consecutive year.
"We are very proud of our volleyball and women's tennis programs for their outstanding performance in the classroom," said Mizzou Director of Athletics Jim Sterk. "This honor reflects the dedication of our student-athletes, academic commitment of our coaches and the outstanding work of our Mizzou Made staff. Mizzou's faculty plays an important role in the academic success of our student-athletes and we are grateful for their outstanding work in the classroom, too."
All told, more than 1,200 teams from 312 NCAA Division I institutions were recognized for academic excellence after scoring in the top 10 percent of their respective sports in the most recent Academic Progress Rates report.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams compiled by the NCAA and provides a real-time look at a program's academic success for each semester by tracking the progress of scholarship student-athletes. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each program's academic performance.
All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.
Mizzou has earned 46 all-time Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA in 13 different sports over the program's 13-year history.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 23.
