9 wrestlers – former, current and future – to wrestle in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Olympic and World medalist bronze medalist J'den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) leads a contingent of Mizzou wrestlers competing at the U.S. Open, April 26-28, in Las Vegas, Nev. The group of Tiger wrestlers includes four wrestling under the Missouri Wrestling Regional Training Center brand, four future Mizzou wrestlers, as well as former Mizzou wrestler, two-time All-American Dom Bradley (Blue Springs, Mo.).
In the men's freestyle brackets, the top seven finishers will advance to the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in May. The winners at 61 kg, 65 kg, 79 kg, 86 kg and 92 kg will advance to Final X, which will be held in June, while the winners of a weight with a World medalist returning (57 kg, 70 kg, 74 kg, 97 kg and 125 kg) will earn an automatic bid to the finals of the Challenge Tournament.
With the addition of two new weight classes to this year's World Championships cycle, Cox will wrestle at 92 kg, up from 86 kg where he won Olympic Bronze in 2016 and World Bronze in 2017. Because of the weight class change, Cox will have to wrestle for his spot in the finals of the World Team Trials. If he were to not switch weights, Cox would have been able to sit until the finals because of his finish at the 2017 World Championships. He will enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed, last wrestled at the Freestyle World Cup (April 7-8) in Iowa where he helped Team USA claim gold.
Joining Cox in senior men's freestyle competition will be Alan Waters (Kansas City, Mo.), Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.) and Bradley. Bradley, who also wrestled with Team USA at the Freestyle World Cup, will be the top-seed at 125 kg, while Eierman is seeded at No. 9 at 65 kg and Waters No. 11 at 61 kg. Eierman is coming off his second All-America honor in 2017-18, as he placed fourth at 141 pounds at the NCAA Wrestling Championships (March 17) and was named the MAC Wrestler of the Year.
Five Tigers will wrestle in the junior freestyle division, as current Tiger Jake Raschka (Pewaukee, Wis.) will be joined by incoming Tigers Zach Elam (Kansas City, Mo.), Jarrett Jacques (Columbia, Mo.), Brock Mauller (Columbia, Mo.) and Cevion Severado (St. Louis, Mo.).
