MIZZOU HEADS SOUTH TO FAYETTEVILLE FOR THE JOHN MCDONNELL INVITATIONAL
- Mizzou Track & Field will continue its 2018 outdoor campaign by traveling south to Fayetteville for the John McDonnell Invitational this week. Action will get started on Thursday with multi-events, then carry into Friday and Saturday for track & field events.
- A live stream of the meet will be available on SEC Network + through ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN app. Friday's action is slated to start at 12:15 p.m. (CT) with the men's discus, while Saturday's action will begin with the men's hammer throw at 11 a.m. (CT).
- Mizzou's throws group has started the 2018 outdoor season off on the right foot, as five athletes have already posted program top-10 marks this season. In Mizzou's most recent meet, the Ole Miss Classic (March 31), sophomore Allie Webb posted a personal record in the javelin for the second time this season, as she checked in at No. 8 all-time with a mark of 44.11m (144-9). At the Arkansas Spring Invitational (March 23-24), redshirt junior Will Fife joined the top-10 list at No. 7 in the shot put with a mark of 18.58m (60-11.5), while freshman Megan Haley set a top-10 mark in the javelin, checking in at No. 9 with a throw of 43.40 (142-5). Mizzou's other two top-10 marks came at the CMU Open (March 17), as junior Becky Keating posted the second-best mark in program history in the hammer throw at 63.87m (209-6) and redshirt sophomore Patrick Kunza posted the eighth-best mark in the men's hammer throw at 62.70m (205-8).
- All three of Mizzou's high jumpers - junior Valeria Kostiuk, junior Karissa Roman and junior Landon Cuskelly - will be looking to post NCAA qualifying marks this weekend in Fayetteville. Kostiuk will be making her outdoor debut this weekend, while Roman looks to build off her jump of 1.75m (5-8.75) at the Ole Miss Classic (March 31), which matched her personal-best. During the indoor season, Kostiuk and Roman both joined Mizzou's top-10 list, as Kostiuk's mark of 1.83m (6-0) matched the school record and Roman's jump of 1.77 (5-9.75) ranks 10th. Cuskelly, who made his outdoor debut at the Ole Miss Classic (March 31) with a jump of 2.01 (6-7), will be looking to jump near his personal-best mark of 2.20 (7-2.5), which would rank third all-time in program history.
- With postseason competition right around the corner, 10 Mizzou athletes currently have 11 top-48 marks in the NCAA West region. The Tigers will have four more meets to set qualifying marks, as times/marks need to set by the SEC Outdoor Championships (May 11-13).
- On the men's side, six Tigers currently have top-48 marks, led by Fife's shot put mark of 18.58m/60-11.5 in the shot put, which currently ranks 12th in the west. Other top-48 marks include redshirt senior Jerrad Mason (400m dash - 38 - 47.48), freshman Chris Conrad (800m run - 23 - 1:50.00), Kunza (Hammer Throw - 16 - 62.70m/205-8), redshirt junior Avery Carter (Hammer Throw - 36 - 60.49m/198-5), and senior Rauno Liitmae (Javelin - 43 - 60.40m/198-2)
- For the women, senior Karissa Schweizer's time of 32:00.55 in the 10,000m ranks as the top time in the west, while redshirt junior Gabi Jacobs has posted two top-48 marks (Shot Put - 33 - 15.26m/50-0.75, Discus - 20 - 52.57m/172-6). Other top-48 marks include Roman (High Jump - 13 - 1.75m/5-8.75), and Keating (Hammer Throw - 7 - 63.87m/209-6).
SCHWEIZER SETS 10,000m SCHOOL RECORD AT STANFORD INVITATIONAL
- Making her collegiate debut in the 10,000m run, Mizzou Track & Field senior Karissa Schweizer set the school record in a third-place finish in the 10,000m run at the Stanford Invitational (March 30). Schweizer finished third in the invitational heat behind professional runners Gwen Jorgenson (Nike – Bowerman TC) and Carrie Dimoff (Bowerman TC), crossing the finish line at 32:00.55, the eighth-best all-time mark in NCAA history, according to the USTFCCCA.
- Schweizer led for parts and stayed near the front pack for the majority of the race, as her third-place finish at 32:00.55 is the top collegiate performance this season, and is eighth all-time on the collegiate list as she checks in behind Anna Rohrer's (Notre Dame) 2017 time of 31:58.99. Schweizer surpassed teammate redshirt junior Jamie Kempfer's previous school record mark of 33:09.67 by more than a full minute, a mark which Kempfer set at last year's Stanford Invitational. Schweizer now holds five school records, as she already holds the outdoor 5000m run (15:18.69), indoor mile run (4:26.54), indoor 3000m run (8:41.60) and indoor 5000m run (15:17.31). Each of Schweizer's indoor marks rank in the top-10 all-time on the collegiate list, while her outdoor 5000m run time ranks 19th.
FIVE SET PERSONAL RECORDS AT SFSU DISTANCE CARNIVAL
- Mizzou had five runners set personal record marks in the 5000m run at the San Francisco State University Distance Carnival (March 30). Three Tigers finished in the top-50 in the women's race, as redshirt sophomore Jordyn Kleve finished 24th at 17:23.04, redshirt sophomore Sophia Racette finished 35th at 17:32.52 and junior Hannah Thomas finished 50th at 17:45.58. Racette and Thomas each set personal records. In the men's race, redshirt junior Zach Cook and redshirt sophomore Michael Widmann each set personals bests, finishing at 14:50.69 and 14:59.24, respectively.
WEBB AND FARMER POST PROGRAM TOP-10 MARKS AT OLE MISS CLASSIC
- Mizzou headed south for the Ole Miss Classic, where the Tigers recorded 19 top-five finishes, including 13 in field events, and two top-10 program marks. Sophomore Allie Webb and redshirt sophomore Samantha Farmer each produced program top-10 marks at the meet, as Webb improved her javelin personal record mark which ranks eighth all-time, while Farmer's time in the 3000m steeplechase was good enough to rank 10th.
- Webb notched a third-place finish in the javelin with a toss of 44.11m (144-9), improving on her previous personal best of 43.62m (143-1), which she set at the CMU Open (March 17). The mark is just two inches short of passing Sandra Hampton's 2013 mark of 44.18m (144-11) to rank seventh. In the steeplechase, Farmer shaved six seconds off her personal record to post a time of 11:05.26 to finish third, as she surpasses Carolyn Rauen's 2006 mark of 11:05.46 to join Mizzou's top-10.
- Three Tigers recorded event wins on the day, as redshirt senior Jerrad Mason won the 400m dash, junior Maya Cody and junior Karissa Roman won the high jump. Mason and Roman recorded personal records in their wins, as Mason crossed the finish line at 47.48 and Roman matched her personal best jump at 1.75m (5-8.75), while Cody crossed the finish line first at 11.76.
THROWS GROUP SHINES FOR MIZZOU AT ARKANSAS SPRING INVITATIONAL
- Mizzou wrapped up competition at the Arkansas Spring Invitational with 10 top-three finishes and two top-10 program marks. Mizzou's throws group especially shined for the Tigers, as the group recorded four event wins and seven top-three finishes. In the men's shot put, redshirt junior Will Fife recorded the seventh-best throw in program history, while freshman Megan Haley posted the ninth-best program throw in the javelin.
- Fife recorded his second personal best in the shot put in as many meets, as the Tiger junior recorded a mark of 18.58m (60-11.5) with his last throw to seal his event win and enter the Mizzou top-10 list at No. 7. Fife's mark surpassed Gene Crews' 1965 mark of 18.44m (60-6) on the Mizzou top-10 list.
- In just her second collegiate meet, Haley posted a top-10 program mark once again in the javelin. - Keating posted the second-best hammer throw in program history, as the Tiger junior won the event with a mark of 63.87m (209-6). Keating entered the meet with the fifth-best mark in program history, as she improved on her previous personal best of 58.59m (192-3) from the 2017 NCAA West Preliminary (May 25), and now only trails Kearsten Peoples' 2015 mark of 66.17m (217-1) on Mizzou's top-10 list. In the men's hammer throw, Kunza and redshirt junior Avery Carter finished first and second at 62.70m (205-8) and 60.49m (198-5), respectively.
