MIZZOU OPENS UP POSTSEASON COMPETITION IN LONE STAR STATE
- Mizzou Track & Field begins postseason competition with the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 24-25, in College Station, Texas. Once again this year, SEC Network + & WatchESPN will provide live coverage of the meet, with Dwight Stones, Larry Rawson and Jill Montgomery on the call. Also on the broadcast as the field host will be Mizzou Track & Field alum and current ESPN SportsCenter anchor John Anderson.
- This weekend's SEC meet will be the final opportunity for the Tigers to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which will be held March 9-10 back in Gilliam Indoor Stadium in College Station.
- The Mizzou women's team, led by senior Karissa Schweizer, enters the meet ranked No. 12 in the USTFCCCA Division-I National Team Rankings.
- Schweizer, was named The Bowerman Mid-Indoor Season Watch List after a terrific start to her senior indoor campaign. The three-time NCAA National Champion began the season by resetting her own school record in the 5000m run at the BU Season Opener (Dec. 2), as the Tiger senior rebounded from an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships two weeks prior to win the event with a time of 15:17.31. Schweizer then followed up her performance in the 5K with a school record performance in the mile run at the Columbia Challenge (Jan. 27), as Schweizer smashed the previous school record by more than seven seconds, clocking a time of 4:27.54. The Tiger senior was not finished, however, as she returned to New York City a week later to race in the 3000m run at the famed Millrose Games (Feb. 3), where she set the collegiate record with a time of 8:41.60. Currently, Schweizer holds the top-time in the NCAA in the 3000m run and 5000m run, while her mile run time ranks second. Among all-time NCAA marks, Schweizer's mile run and 5000m run times rank fifth. This weekend, Schweizer will race in the 3000m run and distance medley relay.
- Two Tigers set school records in Mizzou's most recent outing, as redshirt freshman Ja'Mari Ward broke the long jump school record, while senior Valeria Kosituk matched the school record in the high jump. Ward was named SEC Field Athlete of the Week for his jump at the Hearnes Center, as the Tiger freshman posted a mark of 7.97m (26-1.75). The mark matches the best mark set in the SEC this season, and is tied-for-fourth-best in the NCAA this season. In the women's high jump, Kostiuk matched the school record mark with a clearance of 1.83m (6-0). She will most likely have to improve her mark at the SEC meet to qualify for the NCAA meet, as it currently ranks 16th in the NCAA this season.
- Last season, Mizzou's women's team finished 10th at the SEC Indoor meet, while the men finished 13th. Schweizer was crowned the Cliff Harper Trophy winner as the women's top scorer at the meet, as the then-junior turned in conference championship performances in the mile run and 3000m run.
SCHWEIZER NAMED TO THE BOWERMAN WATCH LIST
- Mizzou senior Karissa Schweizer was named to The Bowerman Mid-Indoor Watch List, as announced by the USTFCCCA. The Bowerman is annually awarded to the nation's top male and female student-athlete in NCAA Track & Field.
- Schweizer has experienced a tremendous start to her indoor season this year, as she has set a school record in each of her four performances this season. Most recently, Schweizer set the collegiate record in the 3000m run at the Millrose Games (Feb. 3), winning USTFCCCA Division-I Women's National Athlete of the Week and the Southeastern Conference Women's Runner of the Week honors in the process. Schweizer was the top collegiate finisher in the race, as she crossed the finish line fourth at 8:41.60. Schweizer's time surpassed the previous collegiate record from 2009 by Colorado's Jenny (Barringer) Simpson (8:42.03), as well as the Mizzou school record mark of 9:06.39, which was set by Sabrina Dornhoefer in 1984. The mark is also the seventh-fastest time in the world this season.
- Schweizer now holds top-five all-time NCAA marks in the mile run, 3000m run and 5000m run, all set this season. She clocked a time of 4:27.54 in the mile run at the Columbia Challenge (Jan. 27), and a 15:17.31 in the 5000m run at the BU Season Opener (Dec. 2, 2017). Both times ranks as the fifth-fastest time in NCAA history. Schweizer also clocked a 2:44.12 in the 1000m run at the Arkansas Invitational (Jan. 12). All four marks ran this season are school record marks.
WARD NAMED SEC FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
- Mizzou redshirt freshman Ja'Mari Ward was named the Southeastern Conference Field Athlete of the Week, announced by the league office Feb. 20. Ward, who won was named the 2017 SEC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, set the indoor long jump school record at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge (Feb. 16).
- Ward finished first in the long jump at last week's home meet, as the Tiger freshman recorded a jump of 7.97m (26-1.75) to set the school record, which surpassed Yussuf Alli's 1984 mark of 7.91m (25-11.75). The mark puts Ward in position to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, as it currently matches the fourth-best jump in the NCAA this season (top-16 marks qualify). Ward's mark is also tied for the best mark in the SEC this season, as Florida's Grant Holloway recorded an identical mark at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 26.
- Among program records, Ward now holds the school record in the indoor long jump, the second-best mark in the outdoor long jump (8.13m/26-8.25), the sixth-best indoor triple jump mark (15.66m/51-4.5) and the eighth-best outdoor triple jump mark (15.44m/50-8).
- Ward redshirted the indoor season in 2017 before joining the Tigers for a stand-out outdoor season, as he captured the SEC long jump title as was named the conference's top freshman field athlete. Outside of Mizzou, Ward captured a Pan American Junior title in the long jump in July 2017, and won a junior national title in the long jump in 2016.
SCHOOL RECORDS FALL AT MISSOURI COLLEGIATE CHALLENGE
- Two school records fell at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge (Feb. 16) as Mizzou hosted its final meet of the indoor regular season. Redshirt freshman Ja'Mari Ward set the top program mark in the long jump, while junior Valeria Kostiuk matched the high jump school record.
- Ward used his second jump to record a mark of 7.97m (26-1.75), surpassing Yussuf Alli's 1984 mark of 7.91m (25-11.75). The mark puts Ward in a position to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, as it currently ranks as the fourth-best jump in the NCAA this season (top-16 marks qualify). Among program records, Ward now holds the school record in the indoor long jump, the second-best mark in the outdoor long jump (8.13m/26-8.25), the sixth-best indoor triple jump mark (15.66m/51-4.5) and the eighth-best outdoor triple jump mark (15.44m/50-8).
- In the high jump, Kostiuk matched Hanne Skei Andersen's 1993 mark of 1.83m (6-0) to finish first. Kostiuk, the 2017 NJCAA Indoor National Champion, needed just five jumps at the D-I collegiate level to reach Mizzou's school record. Her mark is on the bubble of qualifying for the NCAA meet, as it currently matches the 16th-best jump in the NCAA this season. Junior Karissa Roman (Kewaukee, Ill.) finished just behind Kostiuk, palcing second with a jump of 1.75m (5-8.75).
- Also at the Hearnes Center, junior Maya Cody, who already held the second-best 60m dash time in program history, improved her personal-best mark by running a 7.36 to finish first. Cody now sits just .05 seconds away from LaQuisha Jackson's 2015 time of 7.31.
- In the shot put, Mizzou finished with the top-three marks in the event, including two top-10 program marks from redshirt junior Gabi Jacobs and redshirt freshman Emily Stauffer. The pair had nearly identical marks, as Jacobs recorded the seventh-best program mark at 15.54m (51-0) to finish first, while Stauffer posted the eighth-best program mark at 15.53m (50-11.5) to finish second.
