
Wanjiku Finishes Fifth in Women’s 5000m as Missouri Concludes Day One at SEC Championships

The freshman and four other Tigers tallied all-time records in Missouri’s history books.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Mizzou track and field completed day one of the Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship, highlighted by freshman Monica Wanjiku taking fifth place in the women's 5000m race on Thursday at Fasken Indoor Track & Field Complex with a time of 15:23.44.
TIGERS ON THE TRACK
Wanjiku's fifth place finish in the 5000m marked second all-time for Missouri, becoming the third entry on the list to stand under the 16-minute mark. Freshman Mirriam Chepkirui followed in 16th, crossing the finish line in 16:10.71 to claim No. 6 in the program records.
In the men's 5000m, sophomore Elijah Limo clocked a 14:05.11 to secure 16th, notching sixth on the Missouri charts.
Wichita State transfer Brianna Utecht came out strong in her conference debut, placing tenth in the pentathlon with a score of 4030, her second time this season topping the 4000 point mark and third to reach it in Missouri history. The result bested her previous No. 2 program record by 13 points. In the event, Utecht posted personal bests in the high jump with a 1.68m/5-6 and shot put with a 12.78m/41-11 ¼.
Freshman Sofia Wydra also represented the Tigers in the pentathlon, recording a personal best of 8.91 in the 60m hurdles.
In the women's pole vault, sophomore Anna Ferguson cleared 3.85m/12-7.5 to tie the program's No. 7 all-time record, taking 18th place.
