Tigers Move Up to Seventh, Stand just Six Shots Out of Third
The Missouri Women's Golf Team had an impressive moving day Saturday in round two of the Battle at the Beach tournament, played at Club Campestre in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, improving by 17 shots from the first round and moving up two spots in the team standings. The Tigers shot a team score of 285 Saturday - just one over par after an 18-over 302 as a team on Friday - and that bumped Head Coach Stephanie Priesmeyer's team up to seventh in the team standings. Mizzou's two-day 587 total has them only six shots out of third place heading into Sunday's final round.
Senior Emma Allen (Southampton, England) and junior Jessica Yuen (Bolingbrook, Ill.) led the way Saturday, firing identical one-under par 70s, while junior Cherise Otter (Bloomington, Ind.) was just one shot behind, at even-par 71. Allen birdied four holes Saturday, and moved up to a tie for seventh place individually, at 143, with her first under-par round in her last six. Yuen bounced back nicely from an opening-round 76 to post a four-birdie day as well, and her two-round 146 total puts her in a tie for 17th heading into Sunday. Otter shaved 10 shots off her opening round, and fired an even-par 71 on Saturday, thanks to four birdies of her own. She stands tied for 51st heading into Sunday with a two-day total of 152.
Senior Amanda Kim (O'Fallon, Mo.) continued her steady play in Mexico, following her opening-round 73 on Friday with a two-over 74 on Saturday. Kim turned in three birdies on Saturday, and she'll head into Sunday's final day tied for 25th individually, with a 36-hole total of 147. Fellow senior Cayce Hendrickson (Benton, Ky.) also improved from her opening round, as she came in Saturday with a five-over 76 to give her a 36-hole total of 156 and put her in a tie for 66th individually.
"Emma fought really hard for her score today," said Priesmeyer. She had some stellar up and downs and finished up on a really difficult par three by hitting a 15-foot putt to end her day on a nice note. I thought Jess was in a much better mindset today - she stayed patient and her ball striking was more on point and that gave her some great looks at birdie. She also had an incredible birdie putt on the 17th hole that was from about 80 feet away," she said.
"Cherise had some big-time saves today around the greens," said Priesmeyer. "Yesterday was tough for her in that area of the game, but she put in some extra work after the round Friday and it really paid off and gave her a lot of confidence," she said.
