Tigers Stand Fifth in High-Quality Tournament Field Through 36 Holes
San Marcos, Texas – The University of Missouri Women's Golf team stands in fifth place overall after 36 holes of play today at the Jim West Challenge, after firing rounds of three-under 285 and five-over 293. The tournament wraps up Monday with the final round of the 54-hole tournament, played at Kissing Tree Golf Course in San Marcos, Texas. Mizzou will enter the final round 11 shots off the pace of leader TCU, and just six shots back of second-place Florida State.
"Overall I'm very pleased with the first day," said Head Coach Stephanie Priesmeyer. "Thirty-six holes in one day is always a marathon but I thought we managed the grind and the course pretty well today. Now we will get off our feet and rest up for Monday, and try to continue playing like we're capable," she said.
Mizzou Junior Jessica Yuen (Bolingbrook, Ill.) led the way Sunday with a pair of under par rounds as she shot two-under 70 in the morning, followed by a one-under 71 in the afternoon. Her two-round total of 141 puts her in a tie for seventh place individually in the tournament, five strokes off the pace of the tournament leader. Yuen's day continued her outstanding play in the fall, as she has now shot par or better in 9-of-10 rounds thus far.
"Jess had a very steady day, it was a little frustrating for her because she had a ton of birdie opportunities and they just wouldn't fall," said Priesmeyer. "But she put herself in position to be near the top of the leaderboard, and that's exactly where she expects to be each time," she said.
Senior Amanda Kim (O'Fallon, Mo.) and junior Cherise Otter (Bloomington, Ind.) are each tied for 28th place heading into Tuesday, after firing identical 36-hole totals of 146. Kim, playing in the number five spot in the lineup this week, was steady all day, joining Yuen as the only Tigers to take no worse than bogey on any hole. Kim ended the day with four birdies in all, including three on the back nine of her morning round, and her 26 pars on Sunday were most by a Tiger. Otter shot an opening-round 70 (two-under) in the morning, thanks to four birdies. That marked her second under-par score in her last three rounds.
"Cherise had a fantastic opening round for us this morning, that was fun to see for her," said Priesmeyer. "Amanda was very consistent and put together a really solid day," she said.
Senior Emma Allen (Southampton, England) is tied for 33rd place individually after rounds of one-over 73 and two-over 74 on Sunday. Allen, who won the 2018 Johnie Imes Invitational in her last start to claim her first-ever collegiate victory, tallied six birdies overall on a day where her coach said she didn't have her "A" game along with.
"Emma probably had one of her worst ball-striking days today, but she really hung in there and gutted it out this afternoon," said Priesmeyer. "She fought hard on a day where she didn't have her best, and it was good to see her keep a great attitude through it," she said.
Senior Cayce Hendrickson (Benton, Ky.) rebounded from a morning round of five-over 77 by shooting a two-over 74 in the afternoon. Hendrickson managed just two birdies on Sunday, but she was very consistent, as her 24 pars ranked 13th-best in the field of 78. She finds herself in 54th place individually heading in Monday's final round.
"Great comeback round in the afternoon by Cayce, that was really good to see for her," said Priesmeyer.
