Emma Allen Fires Five-Under 67 to Lead the Field
Columbia, Mo. – The Mizzou Women's Golf team fired a six-under par team round Monday to take a four-shot lead after day one of the 2018 Johnie Imes Invitational, held at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. Mizzou's 282 team total was just two shots off the Imes tournament record for lowest first round by a team (2014 by Kansas State/2015 by Mizzou), and it put the Tigers four shots clear of second-place Florida Gulf Coast (286) and five in front of third-place Florida International (287).
Senior Emma Allen (Southampton, England) had herself a day on Monday, as she posted a five-under par 67 to claim the 18-hole lead, one shot in front of Carolina Andrade of FIU (68) and two clear of third-place Mary Janiga of Mercer (69). Allen went out in two-under par 34 on the front nine, and jumpstarted her inward nine with an eagle three on the par-five 10th hole. She also birdied the par-four 14th hole and ended the day with four birdies and the eagle, opposed to just one bogey.
Junior Jessica Yuen (Bolingbrook, Ill.) stands tied for fourth overall just three shots back of her teammate, as she shot a two-under par 70 Monday. Yuen was a steady one-under on each nine, balancing a pair of birdies with one bogey on each side.
Senior Cayce Hendrickson (Benton, Ky.) tied her best round of the 2018-19 season as she fired an even-par 72 today to find herself in a tie for 13th place overall. She rebounded from an opening-hole bogey to post seven-straight pars, followed by a birdie on the par-five ninth hole for an even-par 36 on the front. Hendrickson was also even on the back nine, with three birdies, three pars and three bogeys to complete the round.
Playing in the #5 spot in the lineup, junior Cherise Otter (Bloomington, Ind.) came up big for Head Coach Stephanie Priesmeyer's Tigers, shooting a season-best one-over par 73 Monday that put her in a tie for 16th place overall after the first round. Otter had consecutive birdies on holes three and four (the only Tiger on Monday to notch birdies on two-straight holes) to get her round off to a quick start. She ended the day with four birdies in all.
Senior Amanda Kim (O'Fallon, Mo.) rounded out the Tiger lineup Monday with a score of 80 that left her in a tie for 65th overall.
Three other Tigers playing as individuals made their first appearances of the 2018-19 season. Freshman Keagan Dunn (Braselton, Ga.) made her first collegiate appearance, and was very impressive with a two-over par 74. Dunn is tied for 25th place individually after day one, and she is atop the standings among the 10 golfers from eight different schools playing in the Imes as individuals.
Right behind Dunn on the leaderboard is senior Mackenzie Perez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), who posted a three-over 75 to tie her career-best round as a Tiger. Starting on the back nine Monday, Perez was three over before the turn, but shot even par on the front thanks to birdies on holes one, six and eight.
Another Tiger making her first collegiate start was redshirt freshman Julia Bower (Columbia, Mo.), who came around in five-over 77 to stand in a tie for 44th overall. Bower opened in six over through her first eight holes, but bounced back in impressive fashion, finishing her final 10 holes in one-under par. Bower, the former 2016 Missouri Class 2A Girls State Individual Champion for Rock Bridge High School, was one under on the front nine, with one birdie and eight pars.
The 2018 Johnie Imes Invitational continues action Tuesday with round two. The Tigers get under way at 8:45 a.m. with their first tee time. Stay tuned to www.mutigers.com for details, or follow the live scoring at www.birdiefire.com.
