Schweizer leads women to third place finish, men finish seventh
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Cross Country senior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) began her 2017 campaign right where she left off in 2016, winning the Commodore Classic on Saturday in Nashville, Tenn. The 2016 NCAA Cross Country National Champion set the Percy Warner Park course record with a time of 16:25.4 in the 5k race, besting the second-place finisher by more than a full minute (1:03.3).
Schweizer's course-record performance lifted the Mizzou women's team to a third-place finish at the meet with 103 points, as the Tigers finished behind Ohio State (60 points) and Vanderbilt (93 points). The Mizzou men's team, paced by redshirt sophomore Thomas George's (Gloucester, England) 13th-place finish, finished seventh with 177 points.
NOTABLE FINISHES
Schweizer's time of 16:25.4 bested Michigan's Erin Finn's previous course record of 16:43.4, which was set in 2015. Two other Tigers finished in the top-20 on the women's side, as redshirt senior Megan Cunningham (Eureka, Mo.) finished 14th with a 5k cross country personal record time of 17:55.3, while redshirt senior Kaitlyn Fischer (Pevely, Mo.) finished 17th with a time of 17:56.1. Rounding out the top-five finishers for Mizzou was freshman Jenna Lutzow (Poplar Grove, Ill.), who finished 37th with a time of 18:21.1 and redshirt sophomore Samantha Farmer (Columbia, Mo.), who finished 44th with a time of 18:23.3.
On the men's side, George led the way with a 5k personal record time of 25:26.1. Redshirt junior Evan Schulte (Columbia, Mo.) and redshirt freshman Justin Loquercio (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) each posted top-50 finishes, placing 34th and 35th with times of 25:58.7 and 25:58.8, respectively.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Marc Burns
"I thought we had some very good things happen today on the men's side," said Mizzou Cross Country head coach Marc Burns. "Thomas did a nice job leading the way today and is developing some consistency that we need up front. It was great to see Evan Schulte back in action and he battled hard the whole way. Justin Loquercio competed hard and continues to impress early in the season. Overall, though, we have to be better top to bottom. We are a much better team than we showed today. The guys will get recovered and back to work tomorrow. We will be back to full strength at Oklahoma State and really see where we are leading into October."
"Our women put forth a strong effort today," said Burns. "Karissa looked effortless in breaking the course record. Megan showed what she is capable of by running in second place most of the last 2k. She struggled a bit in the heat over the last 800m, but she is close to being at a very high level. Kaitlyn ran the most complete race we have seen from her in a couple of years. Her perseverance is paying off in her fifth year and she is rolling. It was good to get a win over a ranked Eastern Michigan team, but felt like we should have been able to race with the front of the race. We are excited to get the crew prepared for Oklahoma State in two weeks."
UP NEXT
Next up for Mizzou will be the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., on Sept. 30. It will be the third of five regular season meets for Mizzou before starting postseason competition. The Tigers will head south to Athens, Ga., for the SEC Championships on Oct. 27, north to Ames, Iowa, for the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 10, and east to Louisville, Ky., for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 18.
HINDMAN COMPETES IN TRIATHLON JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
