Valdiviez won back-to-back Missouri state titles at Rockhurst High School
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Wrestling head coach Brian Smith added fire power to the depth of his lower weights on Tuesday with the announcement of Cameron Valdiviez to his roster. A two-time Missouri state champion at Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Mo., Valdiviez projects to wrestle at 125 pounds at the collegiate level.
"Cameron was a guy who was always on our radar," said Smith. "He is a really good mat wrestler. One of our all-time great wrestlers, Alan Waters, has seen Cameron wrestle at numerous camps and thinks the world of him. The great thing is he is a Missouri kid. With him and his family being Missouri fans, it's a great fit for him. I know he fits #TigerStyle well because he likes what the culture is about and he knows he'll be able to put a lot of time and effort into his academics and his wrestling."
Valdiviez finished his storied prep career at Rockhurst with an outstanding 177-13 record and two state titles. The Lee's Summit, Mo., native won the Class 4 state title at 120 pounds as a junior, then moved up a weight to take home the title at 126 pounds as a senior. Valdiviez's first title run saw the soon-to-be Tiger record a perfect 49-0 season, winning 35 matches by fall en route to the first place finish. Valdiviez followed up his junior campaign with a record of 45-2 as a senior to claim his second consecutive title in 2017.
"I'm excited to work with the team and coaches at Mizzou to sharpen my skills," said Valdiviez. "I am eager to pursue excellence on and off the mat, thus upholding the values of #TigerStyle."
Cameron's twin brother, Colin, won a state title in 2016 at 126 pounds for Rockhurst and is currently a freshman on the Northwestern wrestling team.
