The Tiger junior records a PR time of 1:49.97 as Mizzou finishes competition in California
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Mizzou Track & Field had four student-athletes wrap up competition in California on Saturday, with two competing at the Stanford Invitational and two at the San Francisco Distance Carnival, all in the 800m run. At the Stanford Invitational, one of the marquee outdoor distance meets in the nation, redshirt junior Cain Winebrenner (Kansas City, Mo.) posted a fourth place finish, the top finish of the day for the Tigers.
"We were well represented at two meets out west this weekend, with possibly five to six marks that will be NCAA preliminary round marks," said assistant coach Marc Burns. "Ollie got things started with a big PR last night in the 10k at San Francisco State. Once the momentum got going, we just kept rolling. Karissa and Jamie were fantastic at Stanford knocking out qualifiers. After winning their 1500m heats in different meets yesterday, Cain and Luca came back today and both ran nice PR's outdoors in their 800m races. I am really excited for the crew as we got some really good work done this weekend. I look forward to seeing their continued growth through the remainder of the season."
At Stanford, Winebrenner posted a personal record time of 1:49.97 to earn the top-five finish. The Tiger junior finished just two seconds behind the race winner, and was a mere 1.5 seconds away from cracking the top-10 list in program history. Also competing in Palo Alto was redshirt junior Valeska Halamicek (Weldon Spring, Mo.), who finished 33rd in the 800m run with a time of 2:12.21.
At the San Francisco meet, two Tigers – redshirt senior Luca Russo (Kent England) and junior Mark Sheridan (Ballwin, Mo.) – took the line in the 800m run. Russo won his heat and finished eighth overall with a time of 1:52.84, while Sheridan finished 20th with a time of 1:53.84.
In two days of competition at the two meets in the Golden State, Mizzou posted ten personal records, four top-10 program marks and two school records. On Friday night, junior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) and redshirt sophomore Jamie Kempfer (Festus, Mo.) each set school records as Schweizer posted a time of 15:39.75 in the 5000m run and Kempfer a 33:09.67 in the 10,000m run.
Mizzou will next travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to compete in the Crimson Tide Invitational on April 7-8. The full squad is expected to make the trip down to the meet at Alabama.
