Mizzou Featured in Four Meets Across Texas & California
- Mizzou Track and Field will split into four different directions this weekend, with student-athletes competing at the Texas Relays (Austin, Texas), Bobcat Invitational (San Marcos, Texas), Stanford Invitational (Palo Alto, Calif.) and San Francisco State Distance Carnival (San Francisco, Calif.). The Tiger distance runners will head to California, while the sprinters, hurdlers, throwers and jumpers take off for Texas.
- NCAA Cross Country and Indoor Track & Field 5K National Champion Karissa Schweizer will race in the 5000m run at the Stanford Invitational on Friday in a race which will feature some of the best distance runners in the nation. Schweizer's first place performance in the 5K and second place finish in the 3K gave Mizzou 18 points, good enough to finish eighth at the NCAA Indoor meet, its third-ever top-10 finish.
- The bulk of Mizzou's student-athletes will compete at the Texas Relays on the campus of the University of Texas. The Tigers have entries in sprints, hurdles, throws and jumps events at the meet, including 2016 Indoor and Outdoor 400m Dash SEC Champion Kahmari Montgomery. The Tiger sophomore will compete in the 100m and 200m dash, as well as four relay events.
- Barring a last minute change, freshman Ja'Mari Ward will make his much anticipated Tiger debut this weekend. After winning four Illinois state championship in jumping events, Ward went on to win a US Junior National and Word Junior National Championship over the summer of 2016.
- The Tiger throwers got a jump start on the 2017 outdoor season, with nine throwers competing at the CMU Open on March 18. The Tigers swept all eight throwing events, as redshirt sophomore Gabi Jacobs win the discus and shot put, redshirt senior Jennifer Berilla won the javelin and freshman Emily Stauffer won the hammer throw for the women. For the men, redshirt sophomore Will Fife finished first in the shot put and discus, redshirt senior Ahren Bohanan finished first in the hammer throw and redshirt junior Alex Pascal finished first in the javelin.
Tigers Sweep Throws Events at CMU Open
- Nine Mizzou throwers competed in the Central Methodist Open on March 18, with the Tigers sweeping first place finishes in all eight events they had student-athletes competing in. Highlighting the day for the Tigers was redshirt sophomore Gabi Jacobs, who recorded the second-longest discus throw in outdoor program history with a first place finish.
- Jacobs produced a throw of 54.15 (177-7.75) to record a first place finish in the discus and surpass Jill Rushin's mark of 53.39m (175-2) on the all-time outdoor list. Jacobs now only trails Kearsten Peoples' mark of 57.31m (188-0) in outdoor program history. She also competed in the shot put, posting a first place throw of 14.51m (47-7.25).
- Also recording first place finishes for the women was redshirt senior Jennifer Berilla in the javelin and freshman Emily Stauffer in the hammer throw. Berilla recorded a throw of 38.64m (126-9.25), while Stauffer a throw of 47.56m (156-0.25).
- For the men, redshirt senior Ahren Bohanan recorded a personal record throw in the hammer throw with a mark of 60.89, (199-9.25), finishing first in the event. Redshirt sophomore Will Fife finished first in the discus throw and shot put with throws of 46.45m (152-4.5) and 15.98m (52-5), respectively, while redshirt junior Alex Pascal placed first in the javelin throw with a mark of 59.30m (194-6.5)
- Making their Tiger debuts at the open was Stauffer and freshman Allie Webb. In addition to the first place finish in the hammer throw, Stauffer finished second in the shot put, while Webb finished third in the javelin throw and fourth in the hammer throw.
Schweizer Shines at NCAA Indoor Championships
- Junior Karissa Schweizer shined at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships, recording two All-America honors, including her second National Championship of the 2016-17 athletic season on March 10 with a first place finish in the 5000m run. The Tiger junior followed up the National Championship performance with a second place finish in the 3000m run on March 11, her fourth career All-America recognition. The National title is her second of the year after she won the NCAA Cross Country National Championship in November.
- Schweizer ran the prototypical smart 5000m race, staying near the front of the pack before using her signature kick to separate herself from the rest of the field over the final 400 meters. She finished the race with a personal record and school record time of 15:19.14, resetting the school record which she set on Dec. 3, 2016 at the Boston University Season Opener, where she finished at 15:37.40. Schweizer finished eight seconds ahead of the second place finisher, as her time of 15:19.14 now ranks fifth all-time in indoor collegiate history.
- With the win, Schweizer becomes the fourth female individual National Champion and 16th overall in program history. The Tigers also had relay teams win distance medley relay national championships in 1974 (men) and 2001 (women). Among women's track and field individual national champions, she is preceded by Sabrina Dornhoefer (1985 outdoor 5,000m run), Natasha (Kasier) Brown (1989 Indoor 400m Dash) and Kearsten Peoples (2015 Indoor Weight Throw).
- Schweizer joins an exclusive list of two-time NCAA Champions in Mizzou Athletics history, becoming just the fifth student-athlete and the first ever female student-athlete to accomplish the feat. She joins Mizzou Track & Field two-time National Champions Dick Cochran (1959 and 1960 Outdoor Discus) and Derrick Peterson (1999 Indoor and Outdoor 800m Run), as well as Mizzou Wrestling's Ben Askren (2006 and 2007) and J'den Cox (2014 and 2016).
Mizzou Records Third Top-10 Finish
- Thanks to Schweizer's incredible performance at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships, Mizzou finished eighth in the women's team standings with 18 points
- The eighth place finish is its third top-10 finish at the NCAA Indoor meet in program history and its highest finish since 2001, when the Tigers finished seventh. Mizzou also finished eighth at the NCAA Indoor meet in 1989.
Schweizer Added to Bowerman's Watch List
- Following her second National Championship, junior Karissa Schweizer was named to the Bowerman Women's Watch List, announced by the USTFCCCA on March 15. The Tiger junior added two All-America honors to her resume at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, finishing first at the 5,000m run and second in the 3,000m run.
- Schweizer, who first received votes towards the watch list for collegiate track & field's most prestigious award in January, was officially added to the list following her performance at the NCAA Indoor meet. With her national title in the indoor 5K, Schweizer became the first female student-athlete in Mizzou Athletics history and fifth overall to win two NCAA titles. Schweizer captured the 2016 NCAA Cross Country National Championship in November.
- The Urbandale, Iowa native reset her own 5,000m run indoor school record by winning the 5K indoor national title with a time of 15:19.14, a full 12 seconds ahead of the runner-up. The time was fast enough to rank as the sixth fastest 5,000m run time in indoor collegiate history. Schweizer previously set the school record on Dec. 3, finishing with a time of 15:37.40 at the Boston University Season Opener. The time surpassed Susan Bliss' 1990 mark of 16:33.30.
- The next day, Schweizer recorded her fourth career All-America honor by finishing second in the 3,000m run, recording a time of 9:09.33. With 18 points, Schweizer tied Oregon's Hannah Cunliffe as the top female scorer at the meet, and vaulted the Tigers to an eighth place finish, the third NCAA top-10 finish in program history.
