COLUMBIA, Mo. – For the first time this season, the Mizzou Track & Field team will split in two separate directions, as five women's distance runners will compete at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, on Friday, with the remaining majority of the team competing at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday and Saturday. In all, more than 30 Mizzou student-athletes will compete at the Tyson Invitational, which will feature nine ranked men's teams and 13 ranked women's teams.
In Ames, senior Teylar Adelsberger (O'Fallon, Mo.) and junior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) will race in the 3,000m run, while redshirt junior Kaitlyn Fischer (Pevely, Mo.), redshirt sophomore Jamie Kempfer (Festus, Mo.), redshirt freshman Jordyn Kleve (Urbandale, Iowa) and redshirt junior Nicole Mello (Columbia, Mo.) will run in the 5,000m race. For Schweizer, it will be the first time the Tiger junior competes in a race longer than the mile run since she posted the top indoor 5,000m time in the nation (15:37.40) at the Boston University Season Opener on Dec. 3.
In Fayetteville, sprints and mid-distance will dominate the track events on the opening day of the Tyson Invitational. Sophomore Maya Cody (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore Kahmari Montgomery (Plainfield, Ill.) are among the notables who will take the line for the Tigers in the 60m dash, while redshirt junior Jerrad Mason (Bridgetown, Barbados) and senior LaQuisha Jackson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) will compete in the 400m dash. Five Tigers will run in invitational heats Friday evening, including senior Bailey Hession (Willard, Mo.) in the mile run and senior Cain Winebrenner (Kansas City, Mo.) in the 800m run.
On Saturday, distance and relay events will be on display. The Tigers will have two men's and one women's 4,000m DMR teams toe the start line, along with one men's and one women's 4x400m relay team. The women's 4x400m team of Cody, Jackson, redshirt junior Valerie Thames (Milwaukee, Wis.) and senior Sydney Wells (Fort Smith, Ark.), who set the Missouri Invitational meet record with a time of 3:47.64 on Jan. 20, will be back in action.
In the field events, freshman Ja'Mari Ward (Cahokia, Ill.) is slated to make his collegiate debut in the long jump on Friday and triple jump on Saturday. In June, Ward won a USATF Junior National Championship in the long jump and finished fifth in the triple jump. For the women, redshirt senior Mollie Gribbin (Montpelier, Vt.) will compete in the triple jump and sophomore Karissa Roman (Kewanee, Ill.) in the high jump.
