COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 17 Mizzou Softball competed in its annual Black and Gold scrimmage Saturday afternoon inside Devine Pavilion. Both teams displayed stellar pitching, as Team Black ultimately prevailed with a narrow 2-1 victory over Team Gold.
Redshirt sophomore Madi Norman (Tipton, Mo.) was fantastic in the circle for Team Black, firing 3.0 hitless innings. Norman struck out a game-high three batters, while shutting out Team Gold for the first half of the game.
Senior Cheyenne Baxter (Norborne, Mo.) capped Team Black's impressive performance in the circle with 3.0 innings of solid work. The Tiger righty allowed only one earned run to secure her team's triumph.
Team Gold also saw exceptional pitching this afternoon, highlighted by freshman Parker Conrad's (Winter Park, Fla.) 3.0 shutout frames in the circle. Sophomore Danielle Baumgartner (Mexico, Mo.) started the game for Team Gold and allowed two earned runs over 3.0 innings.
Team Black opened the game's scoring with a second inning solo home run by senior Chloe Rathburn (Mission Viejo, Calif.). The visiting squad extended its advantage in the third inning with an RBI single from redshirt freshman Jolie Duffner (Jefferson City, Mo.).
Team Gold's lone run of the game came in the fourth inning, courtesy of a long solo home run by freshman Braxton Burnside (Paragould, Ark.). Burnside's blast was only one of three hits allowed by Team Black's pitching duo of Norman and Baxter.
Duffner, Rathburn and sophomore Kolby Romaine (Chino Hills, Calif.) all tallied multi-hit afternoons for the Tigers. Freshman Lexi Rampetsreiter (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and sophomore Regan Nash (Camden Point, Mo.) impressed on the basepaths, earning a stolen base apiece.
The Tigers officially kick off their 2017 campaign next weekend (Feb. 10-12) with a trip to Charleston, S.C. Mizzou will compete in five games over three days, highlighted by a pair of matchups against No. 14 James Madison.
