Tigers finish 2016-17 regular season on the road at Auburn on Saturday
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Men's Basketball (7-22, 2-15) dropped its Senior Night contest to Texas A&M (16-13, 8-9), 60-43, on Tuesday night at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers hung around in the first half with the visiting Aggies, but trailed by 10 at the halftime break. Despite improved second-half shooting, Mizzou was unable to make up ground as the Aggies were effective from beyond the arc, hitting on 50 percent of their three-pointers.
Sophomore guard Terrence Phillips (Orange County, Calif.) led the way for the Tigers, as he recorded 15 points, sinking three from deep range. Phillips has scored at least 15 points in seven games this season. Freshman guard Frankie Hughes (Cleveland, Ohio) also contributed eight points and hauled in a career-high six rebounds. Redshirt junior guard Trevor Glassman (Bedford, N.H.) started his first career game for the Tigers, and hauled in a pair of rebounds to set his career high.
Sophomore forward Kevin Puryear (Blue Springs, Mo.) opened the scoring for the Tigers with a midrange jumper, and Hughes followed with a triple to give Mizzou an early 5-4 advantage. After an Aggie scoring spurt, the Tigers responded with a pair of free throws and a Hughes layup to make the score 15-11, Texas A&M.
Following another run by the Aggies, sophomore guard Cullen VanLeer (Pacific, Mo.) sank a three-pointer from the right wing with a minute left in the half to cut Texas A&M's lead to 10. Mizzou trailed 28-18 at the halftime break.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Mizzou began to find the bucket. Puryear put home a basket from inside and after the Tigers forced a turnover, junior forward Jordan Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) knocked down a corner triple to set the score at 34-26.
Phillips found his groove late in the game, as he hit a jumper and followed with a trey to keep the Tigers within 10 with 7:31 remaining.
Mizzou could not get its shot attempts to fall down the stretch, and the Aggies were able to extend the lead and eventually seal the 60-43 result.
Next on the slate for Mizzou is the regular season finale at Auburn on Saturday, March 4, at 2:30 p.m. CT. Live coverage can be found on the SEC Network and the Tiger Radio Network.
Following the Auburn game, the Tigers will head to Nashville, Tenn., for the Southeastern Conference Tournament (March 8-12). Played at Bridgestone Arena, all early-round action will have live coverage on the SEC Network.
