12/8/2017 7:12:00 PM | Track & Field
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Track & Field opened its indoor season as a team Friday as the Tigers hosted the Missouri Holiday Opener at the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse. Six Tigers won seven events at the meet, including redshirt junior Avery Carter (Lee's Summit, Mo.), who claimed first place finishes in the weight throw and shot put.
Carter began the day by posting a personal record in the weight throw, as the Tiger junior posted a mark of 16.75m (54-11.5) with his final throw of the event. Carter improved his personal record by more than meter with the throw, surpassing his previous best mark of 15.59m (51-1.75), which he set at the last year's Border Battle (Jan. 9, 2017). The Lee's Summit, Mo., native would then return a few hours later to compete in the shot put, where Carter finished first with a mark of 17.09m (56-1).
Mizzou swept the high jump, as junior Landon Cuskelly (El Dorado, Kan.) finished first for the men, while junior Karissa Roman (Kewanee, Ill.) and Valeria Kostiuk (Kiev, Ukraine) finished first and second, respectively, for the women. Making his Tiger debut, Cuskelly came within an inch of posting a top-10 program mark as he cleared 2.10m (6-10.75) to earn his first place finish. For the women, Roman and Kostiuk each cleared 1.75m (5-8.75), with Roman clearing the mark on her first jump to take first. Roman's leap was a personal record mark, and both marks were just an inch from top-10 program marks.
In the women's shot put, redshirt junior Gabi Jacobs (Bloomington, Ill.) earned a first place finish with a mark of 14.91m (48-11). The 2017 SEC Outdoor discus champion's mark was just 0.04m from her personal record mark of 14.95 (49-0.75), which she set at the 2017 SEC Indoor Championships.
In track events, freshman Chris Conrad (O'Fallon, Ill.) finished first in the 600m run with a time of 1:19.82, while redshirt senior Ben Goodman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won the mile run with a time of 4:26.25. The 600m run race was the first collegiate track debut for Conrad, who captured the 800m run Illinois state title as a senior last spring.
Mizzou Head Coach Brett Halter
On which performances stood out for him at the meet…
"I think our high jumpers, Landon Cuskelly, Karissa Roman and Valeria Kostiuk, as well as Chris Conrad, really stood out today. The marks that our high jumpers produced today were pretty substantial marks. At the end, Landon took some good jumps at 7 foot, and Karissa and Valeria were close to clearing 5-10. For all three of them, that is a good place to be in at this time of the year. On the track, Chris ran an exceptional race in his first time in a Tiger uniform, which is pretty remarkable."
On the throwers performance…
"I thought the throwers did a really terrific job. The newcomers stuck their noses in there and did a great job, and the returners were really solid. We got a great spark from CeCe Johnson, who is from Missouri, went to Tulsa and now came back, she is poised to have a good year and we are excited for her."
Mizzou will now have a break for a full month before it competes again at the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. (CT).
