Ricky Sanders and Tommy Boone poised to join the Black & Gold in Fall 2018
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Men's Golf has signed two talented golfers to its 2018 recruiting class, landing both Tommy Boone (Plano, Texas) and Ricky Sanders (The Hague, Netherlands) as future Tigers.
After watching current freshmen Jamie Stewart (Renfrewshire, Scotland) and Jack Parker (Columbia, Mo.) make such an immediate impact on the team's performance this season, head coach Mark Leroux and assistant coach Grant Milner are understandably excited about adding two more prospects loaded with potential, starting with the 2018-19 season.
Boone, a current senior at Plano Senior High School in Plano, Texas, has a stout track record. He has contributed at the prep level, winning the 2017 Bart Granger Tournament, while also managing to lead his team to a six-place state championship finish in Texas Class 6A. Boone has also experienced success outside of high school, as he has runner-up finishes at several major AJGA events, including the AJGA Junior Championship at The Woodlands Country Club and the AJGA Lockton Kansas City Junior. As a result, Boone is currently ranked 134th in Titleist's Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings.
"Both Coach Milner and I really liked Tommy Boone when we watched him play here in the state of Missouri at the AJGA Lockton event in Kansas City," Leroux said. "He plays very consistent golf and keeps the ball in-play. His demeanor on the course is very mature for a high school player. He competes to win, which is an attribute we always seek in our recruits."
Sanders follows in the footsteps of current Tiger senior Trevor Ullestad (Jewell, Iowa), as the European standout currently plays at Indian Hills Community College (Ottumwa, Iowa). During his first season, Sanders won the NJCAA Individual National Championship, while helping guide his team to a runner-up finish. Due to his excellent performance during his freshman campaign, Sanders was awarded the NJCAA DI Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award, which recognizes the best freshman JUCO golfer in the country. He was also one of 30 finalists for the NJCAA Jack Nicklaus Award, which is given to the best JUCO golfer, regardless of class, and was named a Second Team PING All-American.
"Ricky earned plenty of different awards in his first season at Indian Hills, and his level of play is a big reason why," Leroux said. "I watched him play recently in a junior college event in very cold, very windy conditions. He held the first round lead and might have been the only player in the field to post an under-par round in extremely adverse weather conditions. That's a winning attitude and competitive desire. I watched him flight his golf ball into the wind and was very impressed. There were no other golfers in the tournament hitting the shots he was. He also has that 'I'm going to win' attitude."
