STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mizzou Men's Basketball (5-14, 0-7) took a lead into halftime for the fifth time in conference play, but an 18-8 Mississippi State (13-6, 4-3) run off six three-pointers helped push the Bulldogs ahead of the Tigers in the end, 89-74, on Wednesday evening. The Tigers made seven three-pointers and shot 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the field in the first half to take a four-point lead after the opening frame.
Leading the Tigers in scoring in the game were junior forward Jordan Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore guard Jordan Geist (Fort Wayne, Ind.), who each recorded 18 points. Barnett led the Tigers in rebounding for the fifth time this season, grabbing eight boards.
Barnett started 2-for-2 from three-point range for Mizzou's first two buckets of the game. The Tigers came out of the gates hot, with Barnett's early shooting helping stake Mizzou to a seven-point lead, 13-6, with 13:42 left in the half.
Mizzou kept firing, with sophomore guard Cullen VanLeer (Pacific, Mo.) hitting one of his three first-half three, to get the Tigers to another seven-point lead, 27-20, with 8:02 left in the first half. The Bulldogs tightened the game again twice to just one-point Mizzou advantages, but an 8-0 run from 3:31-1:48 got the Tigers to its largest lead of the game, 41-32.
An exchange of buckets and free throws from MSU and a jumper from Puryear set the halftime score of 43-39 in Mizzou's favor. Puryear led the Tigers at the break with his 10 points.
Mississippi State came out hot after the break, connecting on eight second-half three-pointers. The Bulldogs first grabbed the lead at 47-46 with 15:58 left in the game following a jumper from Quinndary Weatherspoon. Lamar Peters sank five straight three-pointers during Mississippi State's 18-8 run as the lead grew to 13 points. The Tigers showed resiliency, cutting the lead to as little as seven on two separate occasions, but could never regain the lead, falling 89-74.
Mizzou will hit the court again on Saturday, Jan. 28, when the Tigers host South Carolina. Tipoff from Mizzou Arena is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
