COLUMBIA, Mo. – The women's sprinters set three records to highlight the day for Mizzou Track and Field at the Missouri Invitational on Friday at the Hearnes Center. Mizzou had impressive showings in the field events as well, as five set personal records and 11 recorded top-five finishes.
"We had a great day as a team. It was fun to be home," said head coach Brett Halter. "Our performance put us another step closer to being prepared for championship meets in February. It was thrilling to see Maya Cody, Karissa Roman, Mollie Gribbin, Patrick Kunza and many other individuals step up and perform at a high level. We will all keep pushing through as we get through January and transition into championship season."
Leading the way for the sprinters was sophomore Maya Cody (St. Louis, Mo.), who set a personal record in the 60m dash for the second time this season by finishing first with a meet record time of 7.40. Cody, who already held the second-fastest 60m dash time in school history, improved her personal record by .08 from the Border Battle (Jan. 7). Senior LaQuisha Jackson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished just behind Cody in the 60m dash, placing third with a time of 7.51.
Finishing first in the 60m hurdles was redshirt sophomore Valerie Thames (Milwaukee, Wis.), who posted a personal record time at 8.60. Thames' time now stands alone for the fifth fastest 60m hurdles time in program history. Finally, Mizzou's 4x400m relay team of Cody, Jackson, Thames and senior Sydney Wells (Fort Smith, Ark.) finished first with a meet record time of 3:47.64. The sub-four minute time was fast enough to rank second in program history.
The Tigers dominated the competition in the field events, taking home first place finishes in the men's weight throw, women's weight throw and women's shot put. Redshirt freshman Patrick Kunza (Wentzville, Mo.) shattered his old personal record mark by a full meter in the shot put, finishing first with a throw of 17.71m (58-1). For the women, redshirt freshman Rebecca Keating (Reading, England) set her personal record with a first-place throw of 16.62m (54-6). Redshirt sophomore Gabi Jacobs (Bloomington, Ill.) registered the third first place finish in the field events for Mizzou, posting a 14.43m (47-4.25) to earn her second first place finish of the season.
Three other Tigers – redshirt junior Sean Harrell (Springfield, Mo.), sophomore Karissa Roman (Kewanne, Ill.) and junior Shammai Ilis – recorded personal records in field events on Friday. Roman finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.70m (5-7), while Harrell finished fifth in the weight throw with a throw of 16.17m (53-0) and Illis fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.85m (38-10.5).
Making her Tiger debut after transferring from Nebraska, 2015 NCAA All-American Mollie Gribbin (Montpelier, Vt.) finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 12.03m (39-5.75).
In the women's mile run, Mizzou finished second and third, with redshirt freshman Samantha Farmer (Columbia, Mo.) finishing at 5:14.83 and sophomore Hannah Thomas (Urbandale, Iowa) at 5:17.87.
Mizzou will hit the road again for its next competition, traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 27-28.
