ROTTERDAM, Netherlands – Mizzou Cross Country and Track & Field freshman Austin Hindman (Wildwood, Mo.) will compete in the triathlon at the International Triathlon Union's (ITU) World Championships Saturday, Sept. 16. Hindman – who won the same race last year in Cozumel, Mexico – will delay the beginning of his collegiate career to pursue his second gold medal at the world level.
The event is slated to begin at 8 a.m. local time (1 a.m. CT) in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Complete event information, schedule and start lists for all events at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final are available at rotterdam.triathlon.org. Hindman finished the 2016 triathlon, which includes of a 750m swim, 20k bike ride and 5k run, with a time of 54:02 to claim gold, just the third American to win the event at the junior world level since it was first held in 1990. He was preceded by Lukas Verzbicas in 2011 and Steve Duplinsky in 2005. Hindman would be the first American to win the event twice.
The junior world gold medalist capped a phenomenal high school career at Lafayette High School with four state titles at the 2017 MSHSAA Class 3-4 State Track & Field Championships, winning the 800m run, 1600m run, 3200m run and 4x800m relay. In total, Hindman won nine Missouri State Titles between cross country and track & field, including three 3200m run titles, three 4x400m relay titles and a cross country title as a senior. He set two Missouri state records in the 5k (XC) and 3200m run, clocking a time of 15:04.40 in the 5k at the 2016 Nike Cross Nationals Midwest Regional and a time of 8:43.40 in the 3200m at the Arcadia Invitational in April 2017. For all of his success, Hindman was named the 2016-17 Gatorade Missouri Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
Following his international triathlon experience, Hindman will return to Columbia to compete for the Mizzou Cross Country team, beginning with the Comboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., on Sept. 30.
