Series of clinics and tutorials takes aim at health, fitness and swing advice
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Men's Golf will focus intently on its movements during the spring, summer and fall months leading up to the 2016-17 season. Those movements are closely monitored thanks to the Mizzou coaching staff's certification from the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), which emphasizes the importance of the body to the mechanics of the golf swing.
Assistance coach Grant Milner and Director of Olympic Sports Strength & Conditioning Rusty Burney recently returned from the latest TPI certification clinic in Denver, Colorado (April 22-23), and Milner was emphatic that Mizzou is now ahead of the curve.
"The TPI is the top of the line golf fitness program right now in the country," Milner said. "Bringing that to the Mizzou Golf program sets us apart from every other school that doesn't have that implemented. The ability to connect the body with the swing is absolutely critical. If you can't do something physically, then you're wasting time trying to develop your swing. That's going to be huge for our team going forward."
Milner pointed out that the TPI body screening process allows coaches and golf players to zero in on specific areas to improve upon.
"The TPI screen consists of 16 different types of actions you would do in golf," Milner said. "From that, you can determine where trouble areas are in your movements. The most important areas, the king and queen of the golf swing - the king is glutes, the queen is abdominals. So for us, those will be two areas we continue to focus on in the fall and spring this next season on a more individualized basis.
"A guy might have issues with his shoulders, and he might not be able to get his shoulders in the position to put his swing where he wants it. Or another guy may not have the hip flexibility to get down through the ball on his down swing. Once we determine those things, we can have our players work on those specific areas with stretches and other corrective training."
Thanks to #TPIDEN, Mizzou golf will have the most knowledgable TPI staff in the nation. #MIZ pic.twitter.com/mY4FX7t3JC
