First SEC sweep at University Field since April 18-19, 2014
COLUMBIA, Mo. - No. 19 Mizzou Softball (34-12, 9-9 SEC) posted a 7-1 victory on Monday, clinching a series sweep against No. 16 Texas A&M. It marked the first Southeastern Conference sweep for the Tigers since April 17-19, 2015, against Arkansas. Additionally, it was the first home SEC series sweep since April 18-19, 2014, against Ole Miss.
In only her third start of the season, junior Cheyenne Baxter (Norborne, Neb.) stymied one of the nation's top hitting teams. Baxter surrendered two hits and one earned run over 4.0 innings pitched. She earned the win Monday evening, improving her 2016 season record to 3-1.
Freshman Kolby Romaine (Chino Hills, Calif.) tallied her first career multi-home run game against the Aggies, providing big power production out of the nine spot in the Tigers lineup. Three of Romaine's four home runs this season have come in SEC action, ranking T-2nd most on Mizzou.
Fresh off SEC Co-Player of the Week honors earlier in the day, senior Emily Crane (Troy, Mo.) continued her outstanding play with a perfect 3-for-3 night at the plate. Crane recorded her 16th multi-hit game of the year and sixth three-hit effort this season.
Redshirt senior Taylor Gadbois (Maryville, Mo.) delivered a fourth inning single, extending her current hitting streak to 11 games. Gadbois also picked up her 46th stolen base of the season, tying her single-season career high.
Mizzou reached the scoreboard in three consecutive innings with multi-run frames in the third, fourth and fifth inning. Junior Chloe Rathburn (Mission Viejo, Calif.) put the Tigers on top with a third inning sacrifice fly. It marked her 52nd RBI of the season, tying Crane for the team lead.
The Aggies made it a one-run ballgame following a fourth inning solo home run. Mizzou responded nicely in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs on only two hits. Romaine's first home run of the game was followed by two additional runs aided by costly Texas A&M errors.
Romaine's second home run of the night in the fifth inning sealed the Tigers' impressive six-run victory. Sophomore Paige Lowary (Dallas Center, Iowa) was outstanding in relief, pitching 3.0 shutout innings while allowing only one hit.
KEY MOMENT
The visiting Aggies committed five errors on Monday, supplying the Tigers four unearned runs. Texas A&M's defense fell apart in the third and fourth innings, committing two errors in each at bat for the Tigers. Mizzou took advantage, tallying five of its seven runs in the two innings.
