Tigers overcame 4-1 deficit after two innings
COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 15 Mizzou Softball (25-7, 4-4 SEC) ended its longest losing skid of the season on Saturday afternoon with a big 5-4 comeback victory over No. 16 Tennessee. The Tigers scored two runs in the third inning and one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to complete the win.
Senior Emily Crane (Troy, Mo) powered the Tigers' offense Saturday, delivering the first multi-home run game of her outstanding career. Crane launched a solo home run in the first inning and later added a two-run home run in the third inning for her team-leading ninth and 10th home runs of the season. She entered the 2016 campaign with 10 career home runs and has already doubled her career total in only 32 games played in 2016.
Junior Tori Finucane (Germantown, Md.) was sensational out of the Mizzou bullpen today, delivering her most effective outing this season. Finucane stymied the Tennessee offense with 3.2 innings pitched of shutout ball. The Tiger right-hander allowed only one hit while striking out a season-high seven batters.
Behind Crane's power at the plate and Finucane's efficient work in the circle, Mizzou trailed by only one run entering the fifth inning. Redshirt senior Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.) drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom half of the frame to even the score at four apiece.
An inning later, freshman Chase Nelson (Paragould, Ark.) produced the biggest hit of her first-year campaign with an RBI single off the first base bag. Freshman Danielle Baumgartner (Mexico, Mo.) capped off the Tigers' impressive bullpen work by retiring the final five Tennessee hitters of the game.
KEY MOMENT
Mizzou's bullpen continued to record zeros after a four-run second inning by Tennessee. The Tigers' offense chipped away and finally broke through in the sixth inning. Following a Volunteers error and a successful sacrifice bunt, Nelson hooked a ground ball just inside the first base line for Mizzou's go-ahead run.
