FORT MYERS, Fla. –Mizzou Baseball completed a doubleheader sweep of Hofstra after taking the nightcap, 11-4, on Saturday evening at City of Palms Park. Senior LHP Austin Tribby (Springfield, Mo.) made the first start of his career and reset career-highs in innings pitched and strikeouts and the offense tallied 10+ his for the fourth consecutive game to back Tribby's start.
In all, Tribby went 6.0 innings, allowing just three runs (two earned) on five hits with a career-high eight strikeouts against just one walk. His previous longest outing came on May 5 of last season when he went 3.1 innings. He threw 89 pitches.
Junior CF Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill.) and freshman RF Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.) each tallied a four-hit game, Mizzou's first since Feb. 14, 2015. Brumfield drove in a career-high three runs on those four hits as well. Sophomore Shane Benes (Town & Country, Mo.) also drove in three runs in the win.
After an eight-pitch top of the first for Tribby, Mizzou got a two out rally in the bottom of the first, started by a single from Ring. Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.) then walked and DH Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) drove in a run with a single. Then, after a Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) walk, Benes drove in a pair with a single to left field.
Hofstra got a run back in the second on a two-out double by SS Brad Witkowski, but Benes made a great play at third to retire the side. Hofstra tacked on another run on an RBI single to right in the third, although it was unearned. That cut the Mizzou lead to 3-2.
Mizzou doubled its lead in the bottom of the third as Bond drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. He was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Harris, giving Mizzou a 4-2 lead. Ring then tallied a one-out single to plate a run in the fourth to re-open the three-run lead at 5-2.
After Hofstra got a run in the top of the fifth, Mizzou got that run right back on a two-out single into center by Brumfield and then Mizzou tacked on five more runs in the sixth inning, with three extra-base hits to open the frame. The bullpen of Cole Bartlett (Williamsburg, Ind.), Ty Shoaff (Akron, Ohio) and Graham Ruopp (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) shut the door of the final three innings, allowing just one run.
Mizzou and Hofstra close the four-game series Sunday at 10 a.m. (CT) with Michael Plassmeyer (St. Louis, Mo.) getting the ball. Mizzou Musings:
Head Coach Tim Jamieson
Opening Statement…
"I thought we played with good energy the whole day. We had a lot better number of at-bats that we competed and did a great job with. Pitchers threw strikes. Defensively, this is a tough field to play on but we're hanging in there."
On the hitters staying focused throughout the long day …
"I thought for the most part we did. I thought that we had a couple guys in the lineup being pitched to a little bit unfortunately, but for the most part I thought our guys stayed in and that's why we scored as many runs as we did."
On Tanner Houck's performance in game one…
"Well, a lot like last year, except he has a change up now that he didn't have last year with consistency and that's just one more weapon that he has. His command was back to normal and I think the results spoke for themselves."
On Austin Tribby's performance in game two…
"Well if he can avoid walking a couple of guys and hitting a guy, he doesn't give up a run and really breezes. He really competed well and did exactly what we needed him to do in the second game of a doubleheader."
On his performance…
"I just try to keep my approach simple and try to spray the baseball and not change anything. I ran into some hits I guess."
On the 7-8-9 hitters getting on base…
"You can tell whenever guys at the top of the order are getting RBIs, it means that guys on the bottom of the order are on base and getting you in a position to get them in. Definitely a team effort today."
On having competitive at-bats…
"For me, to have a better at-bat is to be a tough out and to not give into a pitcher and what he is trying to do. If you are doing that, you are going to make his life tough. I think if we buy into that we are going to be successful and hopefully it all works out."
LF Trey Harris
On the doubleheader sweep…
"If felt good. We had fun today. Everyone was flying all over the place, going first-to-third and just having fun playing baseball."
On whether the two games were tiring…
"It felt good. We never get tired when you are winning. It feels good. Adrenaline pumping. It feels good – I didn't get tired at all."
