COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Missouri gymnastics team gave its fans a glimpse of the upcoming 2017 season at the annual Black & Gold meet on Saturday afternoon at the Hearnes Center.
Opening on vault, the Tigers got high scores of 9.775 from sophomore Xarria Lewis (Columbia, Missouri) and freshman Aspen Tucker (Lehigh Acres, Florida). Junior Kennedi Harris (Atlanta, Georgia) posted a 9.75 in the anchor position, while junior Shauna Miller (Knoxville, Tennessee) and sophomore Morgan Porter (Overland, Missouri) each notched 9.7s.
Mizzou began to hit its groove in the second rotation, led by juniors Miller and Becca Schugel (Eagan, Minnesota). In the final two spots in the lineup, Miller and Schugel each posted team-high scores of 9.825 to pace the Tigers. Additionally, sophomore Brooke Kelly (Birmingham, Alabama) earned a 9.775 and Tucker received a 9.725.
Porter was in peak form on beam as she notched a 9.9 to lead Mizzou on the apparatus. Kelly concluded the rotation with a 9.775, Schugel went 9.75, junior Tia Allbritten (Garland, Texas) notched a 9.725 and Tucker had a 9.7.
In the final rotation, Schugel, who did not compete floor during her sophomore season, scored a team-best 9.825 on the event for Mizzou's highest floor tally of the day. Tucker concluded her strong performance with a 9.775 in the leadoff spot, while Porter also received a 9.775. Harris closed the meet with a 9.725.
The Tigers officially open the 2017 campaign at home against Illinois and Ball State on Friday, Jan. 6 at the Hearnes Center at 7 p.m.
