COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Men's Basketball (2-2) opens a six-game home stand at Mizzou Arena with visiting Northwestern State (2-2) on Saturday, Nov. 26, with tipoff slated for 2 p.m. on SEC Network +.
- The Demons enter the game as winners of their last two contests (LeTourneau, 92-87; LSU-Alexandria, 82-69).
-
The Tigers are 2-0 all-time vs. Northwestern State, with both wins occurring inside Mizzou Arena. The Black & Gold defeated the Demons on Nov. 20, 2005 (81-72) and on Dec. 2, 2011 (90-56).
-
Mizzou suffered a heart-breaking result vs. No. 11 Xavier on Thursday, Nov. 17. The Tigers' upset bid came up just short in overtime against the Musketeers, 83-82. The Tigers were powered by freshman guard Frankie Hughes' 24 points against Xavier. With his effort, Hughes became the first Tiger ever to begin his career with back-to-back games of 20 points or more.
-
Sophomore forward Kevin Puryear had a career outing against the 11th-ranked Musketeers, recording the second double-double of his young career with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Puryear scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against Auburn on Jan. 9, 2016.
OPPONENT - NORTHWESTERN STATE
- Northwestern State (2-2) comes to Mizzou Arena having won its last two games, home contests vs. LeTourneau (92-87) on Nov. 18, and vs. LSU-Alexandria (82-69) on Nov. 22.
- The Demons, led by head coach Mike McConathy, have not fared as well away from home, with the squad's two setbacks coming by an average margin of 32.0 points at Texas A&M (72-44) on Nov. 11, and at Oklahoma (97-61) on Nov. 13.
- Northwestern State has two players averaging double-figures in scoring, with senior guard Zeek Woodley's 17.8 points-per-game leading the way. Additionally, sophomore forward Ishmael Lane is averaging 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
- On the boards, senior guard Tra'Von Joseph leads the Demons with his 6.0 rebounds per game. Joseph and Lane are tied for the team-lead in offensive boards, with both Demons with nine through four games.
- Northwestern State has averaged 69.8 points and 36.5 rebounds per game through four contests, allowing 81.2 points and 39.8 rebounds per game to its opponents. Foes of the Demons have shot 49.8 percent from the floor.
BACK ON TRACK WITH WIN VS. TULANE TO CLOSE ORLANDO TRIP
- Sophomore guard K.J. Walton (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored 20 points off the bench in the 67-62 Tulane win (Nov. 20), setting a career-high and easily surpassing his previous career-best of 11 points, which he had accomplished three previous times.
- Mizzou had to work to do at the halftime break vs. Tulane, staring down a 10-point deficit (22-32). A second half surge of 45 points powered the Tigers to a comeback win to finish the Tire Pros Invitational.
- Head coach Kim Anderson's group more than doubled its first half scoring output, also shooting 53.6 percent from the field (15-of-28 FG). The Tigers' shooting efficiency ramped up considerably from their first half performance of 33.3 percent (10-of-30 FG).
ALMOST THERE IN OVERTIME SETBACK VS. NO. 11 XAVIER
- Despite a valiant effort against a ranked opponent in the first round of the Tire Pros Invitational, Mizzou dropped a heartbreaker, 83-82, to No. 11 Xavier in overtime on Nov. 17 at the HP Field House.
- The Tigers had three players score 20 or more points for the first time since Feb. 8, 2014, led by freshman guard Frankie Hughes (Cleveland, Ohio), who scored 24 points. With the effort, Hughes became the first Tiger in program history to start his career with back-to-back games of 20 or more points.
- Sophomore guard Terrence Phillips (Orange County, Calif.) bust out for a career-best 21 points, surpassing his previous high of 16 set twice last year.
- Sophomore forward Kevin Puryear (Blue Springs, Mo.) recorded his second career double-double in the game with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Puryear scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against Auburn on Jan. 9, 2016.
- Puryear was 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the game, becoming the first Tiger to sink 10 free throws in a game since he did so against Arkansas (10-of-11) on Feb. 20, 2016.
MIZZOU ROLLS TO BIG WIN IN SEASON OPENER
- Mizzou's offensive attack fired on all cylinders in its season-opening, 99-44 rout of Alabama A&M on Sunday, Nov. 13, but the Tigers' defense was suffocating, as well. Head coach Kim Anderson's squad set a Mizzou Arena record for fewest assists allowed, yielding just four dimes to the visiting Bulldogs. Mizzou had held opponents to a previous low of five assists four different times.
- Anderson's group put on a show for the fans gathered at Mizzou Arena, with the 55-point margin of victory coming up just one point shy of the all-time best for the building. Mizzou defeated Texas-Pan American by a score of 100-44 on Nov. 22, 2009.
- The Tigers' 99 points stand as the most points scored by Mizzou since early in the 2012-13 season when the Tigers downed South Carolina State by a score of 102-51 (Dec. 17, 2012). It marked the first time under Anderson's watch that the Black & Gold broke the 90-point barrier.
FRESHMAN FRANKIE GOES OFF
- Freshman Frankie Hughes (Cleveland, Ohio) shot his way into the Mizzou record books on Sunday, Nov. 13, with his 23 points matching the program record for points in a freshman debut. Hughes finished the game hitting on 9-of-14 field goal attempts (4-of-9 3PT, 1-of-4 FT).
- The Tiger that Hughes matched is a recognizable name - all-time Mizzou great Steve Stipanovich, whose jersey hangs in the rafters above Mizzou Arena. "Stipo" scored 23 points in his college debut vs. Southwest Texas State on Nov. 30, 1979. He went on to average 14.4 points per game in his first collegiate season. Overall, Stipanovich had a remarkable Tiger career, scoring 1,836 points (4th-most in school history) and grabbing 984 rebounds (3rd-most in school history).
- Hughes had just seven points (3-of-7 FG, 0-of-4 3PT, 1-of-2 FT) at the halftime break, scoring 16 points in the second half thanks to scorching hot shooting. The freshman hit on 6-of-7 overall field goal attempts, and sank 4-of-5 from beyond the arc in the second frame.
