COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Men's Basketball (1-0) continues the early stretch of the 2016-17 season in Orlando, Fla., for the Tire Pros Invitational (Nov. 17-20), played at HP Field House at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Tigers open play against No. 11 Xavier (2-0) on Thursday, Nov. 17 at Noon CT on ESPNU.
- Third-year head coach Kim Anderson's squad fired on all cylinders to start 2016-17, winning 99-44 over Alabama A&M on Sunday at Mizzou Arena. Freshman guard Frankie Hughes led all scorers with 23 points in his Mizzou debut.
- Mizzou finished a two-game series with Xavier last season, dropping a hard-fought 78-66 result to the Musketeers on the road (Nov. 17, 2015). Cullen VanLeer and Kevin Puryear led the Tigers with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
- The Tigers return five players with starting experience from a season ago, including sophomores Terrence Phillips and Puryear, who started all 31 games during the 2015-16 campaign.
MIZZOU ROLLS TO BIG WIN IN SEASON OPENER
- Mizzou's offensive attack fired on all cylinders in its season-opening, 99-44 rout of Alabama A&M on Sunday, Nov. 13, but the Tigers' defense was suffocating, as well. Head coach Kim Anderson's squad set a Mizzou Arena record for fewest assists allowed, yielding just four dimes to the visiting Bulldogs. Mizzou had held opponents to a previous low of five assists four different times.
- Anderson's group put on a show for the fans gathered at Mizzou Arena, with the 55-point margin of victory coming up just one point shy of the all-time best for the building. Mizzou defeated Texas-Pan American by a score of 100-44 on Nov. 22, 2009.
- The Tigers' 99 points stand as the most points scored by Mizzou since early in the 2012-13 season when the Tigers downed South Carolina State by a score of 102-51 (Dec. 17, 2012). It marked the first time under Anderson's watch that the Black & Gold broke the 90-point barrier.
FRESHMAN FRANKIE GOES OFF
- Freshman Frankie Hughes (Cleveland, Ohio) shot his way into the Mizzou record books on Sunday, Nov. 13, with his 23 points matching the program record for points in a freshman debut. Hughes finished the game hitting on 9-of-14 field goal attempts (4-of-9 3PT, 1-of-4 FT).
- The Tiger that Hughes matched is a recognizable name - all-time Mizzou great Steve Stipanovich, whose jersey hangs in the rafters above Mizzou Arena. "Stipo" scored 23 points in his college debut vs. Southwest Texas State on Nov. 30, 1979. He went on to average 14.4 points per game in his first collegiate season. Overall, Stipanovich had a remarkable Tiger career, scoring 1,836 points (4th-most in school history) and grabbing 984 rebounds (3rd-most in school history).
- Hughes had just seven points (3-of-7 FG, 0-of-4 3PT, 1-of-2 FT) at the halftime break, scoring 16 points in the second half thanks to scorching hot shooting. The freshman hit on 6-of-7 overall field goal attempts, and sank 4-of-5 from beyond the arc in the second frame.
OPPONENT - XAVIER
- No. 11-ranked Xavier (2-0) has been propelled throughout its latest run as a Top 25 program by the play of junior guard Trevon Bluiett and sophomore guard Edmond Sumner. The duo averaged 15.1 and 11.0 points per game last season, respectfully. Bluiett (25) and Sumner (24) combined for 49 points in Xavier's 84-81 win over Lehigh to start the season.
- Eighth-year Xavier head coach Chris Mack was selected as the USBWA Henry Iba National Coach of the Year for the 2015-16 season after the Musketeers posted a 28-6 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round. XU made it to the Sweet 16 in 2014-15.
- Mizzou battled Xavier in Cincinnati last season (Nov. 17, 2015), taking an early second half lead (38-37) on a Kevin Puryear bucket at 19:19. The Tigers ultimately fell, 78-66 in the contest.
- Xavier leads the all-time series against Mizzou, 4-2. In neutral site games, the Musketeers lead 2-1.
- Mizzou last defeated Xavier on Nov. 24, 2001, in the Wooden Tradition Classic in Indianapolis, Ind., 72-60. Kareem Rush scored 24 points to led the Tigers to victory. Wesley Stokes added 14 points to the Mizzou effort.
