- The Mizzou Tigers (2-5 overall, 0-3 in Southeastern Conference play), look to break a three-game losing streak this Saturday morning as they play host to the Kentucky Wildcats (4-3, 3-2) at Memorial Stadium/Faurot Field. Kickoff for the game – televised on the SEC Network – is set for 11 a.m. (CT).
- Mizzou is looking for its first SEC win for first-year Head Coach Barry Odom, as the Tigers have had a challenging schedule to start league play in 2016, with games against Georgia and subsequent road games at Florida and LSU. Mizzou's first-ever SEC win as a league member came at home against Kentucky in 2012 (a 33-10 MU victory), and the Tigers had won the first three games versus UK in league play until the Wildcats claimed a 21-13 win in Lexington last season.
- Mizzou is coming off a tough 51-45 home loss to Middle Tennessee that was as back-and-forth as the final score would indicate. Mizzou racked up 629 yards of total offense on the night, but two costly turnovers which led to 10 MTSU points, and two drive-extending penalties by MU's defense in the second half on what would have been 3rd-down stops led to 14 more points. To make matters worse, a crucial mistake on special teams led to another bonus TD for MTSU, as late in the first half, Mizzou punted with a 28-27 lead and had MTSU pinned on its own 9-yardline with less than two minutes remaining. But a motion penalty on the punt forced a second kick, and an errant snap got away from P Corey Fatony, and all he could do was fall on the ball at the MU 7-yardline, which led to a Blue Raider touchdown and a 34-28 MTSU halftime lead.
TIGERS BITTEN BY INJURY BUG
- Making matters even worse for Mizzou was the fact that the Tigers were decimated by injuries during the game. Already playing without the services of starting RG Alec Abeln (out w/ankle sprain), senior CB John Gibson was lost on the first defensive snap of the game to a sprained knee. Later, on the same series, senior WLB and team leader Michael Scherer was also knocked out of the game with a sprained knee. Starting TE Jason Reese had to leave the game in the first quarter with bruised ribs as well, and then in the fourth quarter, sophomore DT Terry Beckner, Jr., also left the game with a sprained knee.
- The challenge gets no easier as the Wildcats come in hot, having won two straight, including a last-second, 40-38, win Saturday evening at home against Mississippi State.
