Mizzou wins 10 matches as Lashway advances to the round of 16 in singles play
MINNEAPOLIS – Mizzou clinched 10 overall match wins on day two during an impressive display at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. Mizzou had three doubles pairings advance to the round of 32 and junior Brianna Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.) advanced to the round of 16 in the singles bracket to highlight the Tigers' strong outing.
In the morning session, Mizzou took three of four doubles matches, including a win by the No. 9-seeded pairing of junior Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) and senior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal). All three Mizzou pairings advanced to the round of 32, which will be played tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Lashway won both of her singles matches to clinch a spot in the final 16. The two victories push Lashway's record to 6-0 in the fall, tied for the second longest winning streak of her career. Lashway will take that momentum into the round of 16 where she will face Anastasia Rychagova from Kansas tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
Three Mizzou freshmen put up huge numbers during their first tournament at the collegiate level. As a whole, the first year Tigers won six of seven matches on Friday, including an impressive 3-0 in doubles play.
Freshman Tate Schroeder (Centennial, Colo.) advanced into the singles round of 32, but fell to No. 5 seed Aliona Bolsova (Oklahoma State) in her final match. She will join fellow freshmen Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Claire Sullivan (Memphis, Tenn.) in the singles consolation bracket.
Both Middlebrooks and Sullivan won their singles matches to advance into the fourth round of the consolation bracket. The victories gave Middlebrooks a 3-2 record in singles matches this year, tied for second best on the team, while Sullivan earned her first career singles win by dominating Abigail Sogard of Drake in two sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Middlebrooks, Sullivan and senior Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) each went undefeated (2-0) during day two. Mizzou continues play at the ITA Central Region on Saturday. For up to date information on the news from day three, follow @MizzouTennis on Twitter.
