Junior Clare Raley and freshman Tate Schroeder each won two matches Sunday
BERKELEY, CALIF. – Mizzou Tennis (1-0) earned a victory in its spring debut, taking down Old Dominion (1-1), 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the ITA Kick-off Classic in Berkeley, Calif. Head coach Colt Gaston earned his first career dual win at the helm. Mizzou was led by junior Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) and freshman Tate Schroeder (Centennial, Colo.) who finished the day with wins in both singles and doubles play.
The Tigers fought hard to earn the doubles point, taking two matches in quick succession. Senior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal) teamed up with Raley in the No. 2 doubles spot. The duo started off strong and didn't let up in a 6-3 victory. The pairing of Schroeder and senior Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) clinched the doubles point with their fourth consecutive doubles match victory dating back to the fall campaign, winning by a score of 7-5. Schroeder and Spearman now boast a 4-1 record as a double pair.
In singles play, Mizzou's depth proved to be too much for the Monarchs as the Tigers won at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions to secure the dual victory. Raley earned her second victory of the day by defeating Old Dominion's Natalya Malenko in the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-2. The wins give Raley six overall victories this year and a perfect 2-0 record to begin the 2017 campaign.
Junior Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) followed with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 victory over Adriana Rajkovic in the No. 5 position. The win gives Ismail a team-leading 16 total victories and an impressive 104 over her college career. Ismail now boasts a 7-3 singles record following today's play.
The match-clinching point came from Schroeder, who took down Eliska Petrackova, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles position. This was the fifth singles victory of Schroeder's college career, giving her an impressive 10 overall wins in her freshman season.
Mizzou returns to the court at 3 p.m. C.T. on Monday when it faces No. 8 California. The winner of that match will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships.
