COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou Cross Country team will travel to the Music City on Saturday to compete at the Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tenn. The 8000m men's race will begin at 9 a.m. CT, while the 5000m women's race is slated to begin at 10 a.m. CT.
The Mizzou men's team will compete in a 23-team field which includes six Southeastern Conference teams and No. 28 Louisville. On the women's side, Mizzou will race in a 26-team field which features six SEC teams, including No. 19 Mississippi State and No. 26 Vanderbilt.
Saturday's race will be the second of the season for Mizzou as a group of Tiger runners kicked off the 2016 campaign at the Hawkeye Invitational on Sept. 2. Junior Valeska Halamicek (Weldon Spring, Mo.) paced the women's 3000m race for the Tigers, finishing sixth with a time of 10:29.0, while redshirt freshman Michael Widmann (Naperville, Ill.) posted a strong debut for the men's squad, finishing 25th in the 6000m race with a time of 18:44.5.
Among the Mizzou veterans who will make their season-debuts in Nashville will be redshirt senior Jordan Cook (Columbia, Mo.), redshirt junior Sheldon Keence (St. Charles, Mo.), senior Teylar Adelsberger (O'Fallon, Mo.), redshirt junior Kaitlyn Fischer (Pevely, Mo.) and junior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa). Keence was the highest finisher at the 2015 SEC Championships for the men's team, finishing 22nd, while Schweizer earned Second-Team All-SEC and All-Midwest Regional honors a season ago.
