COLUMBIA, Mo. – Third-year Mizzou Cross Country Head Coach Marc Burns released the men's and women's 2016 schedule on Tuesday. The Tigers will begin the 2016 campaign with the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, on Friday, Sept. 2.
"We are excited to announce our 2016 cross country schedule," said Coach Burns. "We feel our schedule will provide us with some great opportunities to race the courses we will be seeing during the championship phase of our season and provide the challenges needed to prepare us for success at the SEC and NCAA Championships. We open up in Iowa where we will get a good feel for the course we will be racing at the NCAA Midwest Region Championships in November."
Following the season opener, Mizzou will compete in back-to-back meets at SEC schools, first traveling to Nashville, Tenn., to race in the Commodore Classic on Saturday, Sept. 17, followed by a trip to Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday, Oct. 1, for the Chile Pepper Invitational. This will be the first of two trips to Fayetteville for the Tigers, who will return on Friday, Oct. 8 for the SEC Championships.
"In our second meet, we head to Vanderbilt for a chance to race some teams out of our region as we open up the at-large counting period," said Coach Burns. "Then, we head to the Chile Pepper Invitational in Arkansas. There is always good inter-regional competition at this event and it will be nice to see the course for this year's SEC Championships."
Over the weekend of Oct. 13-14, Mizzou will send runners to two separate meets, with the top-seven runners competing at the Pre-National meet in Terre Haute, Ind., on Sunday, Oct. 14 while the rest of the team runs in the Bradley 'Pink' Classic the day before in Peoria, Ill.
"In mid-October, our top-seven runners will compete at the NCAA Pre-National meet, where they will gain valuable experience on the NCAA course," said Coach Burns. "The rest of the team will compete at the Bradley 'Pink' Classic in Peoria, Ill., which will be a nice test for our team and will help us determine the remaining spots for our team of 10 we can run at the SEC Championships."
The Tigers will open postseason competition with the SEC Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 28, hosted by Arkansas. Mizzou will then compete in the NCAA Cross Country Regional Championship in Iowa City, Iowa, on Friday, Nov. 11, where teams hope to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 19.
"The championship phase of our schedule will be familiar territory for our team as we head to Arkansas, Iowa and Indiana State for the meets that matter the most in the fall," said Coach Burns.
