COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Tennis and Interim Head Coach Colt Gaston announced the signing of transfer Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) on Monday. After spending the last two seasons at Xavier, Ismail will be eligible to compete immediately following a full release from the university and will have two years of eligibility remaining at Mizzou.
"I'm very excited about the addition of Amina for this season," said Gaston. "She has beaten some of the best players in college over the last couple of years and there is no doubt she will impact our team right away."
In two seasons at Xavier, Ismail posted a stellar 88-31 record while helping the Musketeers capture the BIG EAST title this past season. After posting an undefeated 7-0 record in singles play during her freshman fall season, Ismail began the 2014-15 spring season ranked nationally. The Maineville, Ohio, native played at the No. 3 position in singles for Xavier, posting a 23-7 record at the position as a freshman and a 24-9 mark as a sophomore. In doubles play, Ismail went 19-7 as a freshman and 22-8 as a sophomore, including an 8-0 mark at the No. 1 position in BIG EAST play in 2015-16.
"I'm extremely excited to join the Mizzou Tennis program," said Ismail. "I see this as an opportunity for a new beginning for me and I'm ready for an amazing adventure as a Mizzou Tiger."
Before joining Xavier, Ismail was ranked the No. 78-ranked recruit in the nation by TennisRecruiting.net for the class of 2014 and was a four-time Eastern Cincinnati Conference Player of the Year at Kings High School. Ismail's two siblings, brother Ra'ees and sister Safiyya, both played collegiate tennis at Xavier and Cincinnati, respectively.
Mizzou is looking to build off its best season in a decade, posting a 16-12 record in 2015-16 while sending a player, Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal), to the NCAA Singles Tournament for the first time since 2003.
