COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Tennis (7-0) defeated Kansas State (3-2), 5-2, Wednesday evening at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. The victory improved the team's record to 7-0, tied for the best start in program history (2002-03).
The Tigers won the doubles point for the day without taking a defeat. The No. 2 pair, junior Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Nigel, Calif.) and sophomore Brianna Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.), teamed up for a 6-4 victory. At the No. 3 position, junior Brittany Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) won their match, 6-3.
In singles, junior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal) and senior Kelli Hine (New Braunfels, Texas) both won in straight sets. Santos took her match 6-4, 6-3, over Sara Castellano while Hine dominated Carolina Costamagna for a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
After losing her opening set, Brianna Lashway won the next two sets to clinch the match for the Tigers, defeating Anna Garcia Navas, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. At the No. 4 position, playing in her first singles match of the dual season, Spearman defeated Iva Bago, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
Mizzou will look to stay undefeated and improve its spring record to an all-time school best 8-0 against No. 32-ranked Wichita State on Thursday, Feb. 11. The Tigers will host the Shockers at the Mizzou Tennis Complex at 5 p.m. CT.
