Tigers led by strong days at the plate from Fagan and Genovese
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - A powerful third inning for Mizzou Softball was not enough to hold off No. 7 UCLA in the first game of the NCAA Super Regional at Easton Stadium on Saturday, with the hometown Bruins taking a 7-4 result. The 10th-seeded Tigers saw big-time performances from junior 2B Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.) and senior SS Corrin Genovese (East Amherst, N.Y.), who both batted 2-for-4.
Fagan's performance included three RBI on a three-run home run to help her set a new Mizzou single-season record with 66 so far in 2015. Her total surpassed Mary Babb's 64 from the 1995 season. Fagan's 66 RBI are also the most for a Tiger since the 2011 season when Ashley Fleming compiled 62.
Freshman P Paige Lowary (Dallas Center, Iowa) was stuck with the loss (18-6) after getting the start and pitching 3.2 innings. UCLA's Ally Carda picked up the win in the circle to improve to 30-6 this season.
The power surge started in the top of the third with Fleming's solo shot over the left field wall, tying the game at 1-1. Two baserunners came on board for Mizzou following the home run with Gadbois getting hit by a Carda pitch and Crane singling up the middle.
Those two Tigers were quickly blasted in by Fagan's home run to deep left center, setting the score at 4-1 in Mizzou's favor. It was Fagan's 13th long ball of the season. Shortly after, Genovese rocked a double to the right center field gap as part of her two-hit performance.
UCLA responded with its own run of scoring in the third inning's bottom frame, scoring three runs to knot the game at 4-4. The Bruins' scoring kept going into the fourth inning with the home team adding two more runs to take a 6-4 lead. Earleywine replaced Lowary with Finucane in the circle during the fourth inning. Finucane finished the game in relief, throwing 2.1 innings with one unearned run allowed.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, UCLA scored a run off a bases loaded walk. The run set the final score of 7-4.
Sunday's schedule at Easton Stadium begins with 2 p.m. CT game, followed by a 5 p.m. CT game (if necessary). Both games will be broadcast on ESPNU.
