Manhattan, Kan. - The Tigers will advance to the third round of the postseason WNIT, thanks to hot shooting from senior Morgan Eye who knocked down a season and WNIT-best nine three-pointers on Sunday in Manhattan, Kan. The Tigers return to Columbia with a 67-48 win over former Big 12 foe Kansas State. Mizzou improves to 19-13 overall this season.
Eye's nine three-pointers in Sunday's game tie the most made for any individual in WNIT history. The record is currently held by South Carolina's Jordan Jones who made nine threes in 2008. As a team, the Tigers made 16 triples, just one away from a WNIT team record. The current best was set at 17 by Missouri State against Iowa in 2005.
Despite taking an early lead in the game, Mizzou did not have it easy against the Wildcats on Sunday afternoon. Mizzou pulled ahead to an early lead, even earning a 10-point advantage over K-State at one point in the first half. The Wildcats wouldn't go away, however. As the halftime buzzer sounded, K-State sunk a jump shot to tie the score up going into the break. Mizzou has not seen a tie-game at the half all season.
Senior Morgan Eye was hot from distance once again as she shot 50-percent from behind the arc in the half, knocking down four three-pointers. The Wildcats shot 50-percent from distance as a team in the first half, but the Tigers outrebounded their opponent 21-16 before the break. Mizzou was able to snag nine first-half points off of K-State turnovers as well.
Michaelis nailed a three-pointer after the half to put Mizzou back on top, but Kansas State fought hard to take advantage of the game. A 6-0 Wildcat run gave the home team a three-point advantage over the Tigers, but Mizzou fought to take back the lead. The Tigers used a 19-0 run in the second half to pull ahead by 22 and never look back.
Mizzou held K-State to just 18-percent shooting in the second half, allowing them just four field goals.
The Tigers will advance to play the winner of Monday's 6 p.m. game that pits Michigan against Toledo. Stay tuned to MUTigers.com for more information regarding game dates and times as it becomes available. Fans can also follow the team on Twitter (@MizzouWBB) and Facebook (/Mizzouwbb).
