Game Notes

#ZOUNotes

  • Mizzou Men's Basketball (5-6) hosts two final non-conference games at Mizzou Arena before beginning Southeastern Conference action, with the first game a matchup with Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-11) on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 8 p.m. (SEC Network+).
  • Freshman forward Kevin Puryear's 12.1 points per game leads the Tigers after 11 games. His accurate 51.6 field goal percentage is only topped by junior forward Russell Woods' stout 67.6 mark.
  • Junior guard Wes Clark scored a career-high 21 points vs. Illinois (Dec. 23), the most points this season for a Tiger. Clark connected on 8-of-16 field goal attempts and dished out four assists.
  • Head coach Kim Anderson's squad is the 15th-youngest roster in Division I basketball, according to Ken Pomeroy.
  • Anderson's rotation has solidified itself into Puryear, Terrence Phillips, Namon Wright and Clark serving as Mizzou's only players averaging more than 20 minutes per game.

Last Time Out

  • Head coach Kim Anderson's group showed great resiliency in fighting back from a 20-point second half deficit in a comeback attempt vs. Illinois (8-5), ultimately falling by a score of 68-63 at the Scottrade Center (Dec. 23).
  • Mizzou held the Fighting Illini to 25 percent (6-24) shooting from the floor in the second half, the Illini's worst shooting half of the season.
  • The Tigers also held Illinois without a point for 9:29 midway through the second half.
  • Mizzou's 43 rebounds tied the team's best output of the season. The Tigers also pulled down 43 against Arkansas State on Dec. 1.
  • Junior guard Wes Clark scored a career high 21 points to reach double figures for the third time this season and the 16th time in his Tiger career. His output marked the most for a Tiger this season and bettered his previous high of 19 against Kentucky on Jan. 29, 2015.
  • Junior forward Russell Woods pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds, more than double his previous career high of four. His 10 boards also marked the most for a Mizzou player this season.
  • Freshman forward Kevin Puryear tallied 12 points for his eighth career double figure output in 11 collegiate games.

20 Spot From Clark

  • Junior guard Wes Clark's career-high 21 points vs. Illinois (Dec. 23) was the second 20-point effort of the season for Mizzou (Puryear, 20 vs. Wofford, Nov. 13).
  • Clark has led Mizzou in scoring twice this season after doing so in five games during the 2014-15 campaign.

Getting Gant Going

  • After averaging just 2.5 points per game in Mizzou's first six games of the season (15 points), sophomore forward Jakeenan Gant has found a rhythm coming off the bench for the Tigers. Gant has averaged 8.4 points per game over the last five games (42 points), including two 11-point efforts vs. Northern Illinois (Dec. 4) and Omaha (Dec. 9).
  • Gant has also impacted Mizzou's rebounding, as the forward has pulled down 4.4 boards per game over the last five games. That more than doubles his six-game average to start the 2015-16 season (1.7).

About Arkansas-Pine Bluff

  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-11) enters its game at Mizzou with wins over Seattle (58-56, Nov. 13) and Southeastern Louisiana (62-60, Nov. 28). The Golden Lions have yet to play a home game, playing games at notable opponents such as Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Iowa State and Texas Tech.
  • The Golden Lions, led by head coach George Ivory, have been outscored by an average of 21.9 points through 13 games this season.
  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff has two players averaging double-digit scoring in junior guard JoVaughn Love (10.7) and junior guard Ghiavonni Robinson (10.5).

Closer Look at the Golden Lions

  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff has averaged 55.2 points per game thus far in the 2015-16 season. Against "high major" competition, the Golden Lions have averaged 49.3 points per game.
  • Besides being scoring leaders, junior guards JoVaughn Love and Ghiavonni Robinson also rarely leave the court. Robinson (30.3) and Love (27.8) are Arkansas-Pine Bluff's only players averaging more than 20 minutes played per game.
  • The Golden Lions reached the NCAA Tournament in 2010 after winning the SWAC Basketball Tournament Championship. Arkansas-Pine Bluff ended the conference's 17-year losing streak in the Big Dance by defeating Winthrop in an Opening Round game.
