Tigers golfing in Bridgeport, W. Va., on Monday and Tuesday
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Men's Golf heads to the Mountaineer Intercollegiate (Oct. 19-20) in Bridgeport, W. Va., hoping to build on what has been a solid start to the 2015-16 season. Head coach Mark Leroux's team has placed in the top five in two of the three tournaments it has competed in, and the level of competition has been consistently high all season long.
The tournament will tee of on Monday, Oct. 19 at the 7,353-yard Pete Dye Golf Club, playing just 36 holes due to expected cold weather and frost. The Tigers will get another shot to knock off No. 15 Penn State, while also competing against the likes of UConn, Miami, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Akron, Mississippi State, Toledo, Towson, Marshall, Seton Hall, St. John's and host, West Virginia.
Leading the Tigers into their fourth event of the year is redshirt senior Wilson Sundvold (Columbia, Mo.), who has played in all three of Mizzou's previous tournaments. He shot a 2-under-par during his most recent outing, and his consistent play and leadership have guided Mizzou thus far.
Next in the Tigers' lineup is junior Euan Walker (Troon, Scotland), who has caught fire, as of late. He paced the Tigers at both the Jackrabbit Invitational and the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, and shot the lowest round (66) of the year by any Tiger. Walker also tied his career personal best with that same round of 66 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
Third in Leroux's lineup is sophomore Hayden Buckley (Belden, Miss.), who has put his potential on display so far in his second Mizzou campaign. He paced the Tigers at the Turning Stone Intercollegiate, while tying with Walker for first amongst the Tigers at the Jackrabbit Invitational. He has recorded three rounds under par, and has also shot two of the four competitive events the Tigers have participated in under par. His performance at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate was outstanding, as he shot a 3-under-par; however he only took second on the team due to the stout performance produced by Walker.
Junior Linus Lilliedahl (Sandviken, Sweden) will play in his third consecutive tournament, as he will hold the fourth spot in the Mizzou lineup. He has shot tournament scores of 224 and 225 on the 2015-16 season.
Last in the Tigers' lineup is freshman Matt Echelmeier (Columbia, Mo.), who like Lilliedahl, will play in his third event of the year. Echelmeier is coming off of a Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate where he shot 9-over-par, tying with Lilliedahl every round of (76-73-76) of the tournament. Echelmeier is just one piece of the young Tiger team that has tremendous potential going forward.
