ATHENS, Ga. – For the third time this season, the Tiger defense held its opponent out of the end zone, but for the first time it wasn't enough as Georgia pulled out a 9-6 win Saturday night at Sanford Stadium.
Kentrell Brothers had a career-high 17 tackles for his sixth double-digit tackle output of 2015, and the Tigers continued their streak of not allowing a 100-yard rusher this season. In fact, the Bulldogs only mustered 120 total on the ground after coming into the night second in the SEC with 231.5 rushing yards per game.
It was clear that defense was going to be the name of the game from the very first play, as Michael Scherer punched Grayson Lambert's first offering of the night into the waiting arms of Ian Simon, who returned the ball all the way to the Georgia 1. The Tigers (4-3, 1-3 SEC) converted a 20-yard Andrew Baggett field goal to take the 3-0 lead.
Marshall Morgan nailed the equalizer from 29 yards out midway through the second quarter, as the Mizzou defense stiffened following a 16-play, 68 Georgia drive.
The Tigers' longest sustained drive of the game came two drives later, when Mizzou drove 84 yards in 12 plays to take a 6-3 lead at the half on Baggett's 24-yarder. That made Baggett Mizzou's all-time leader with 60 career FG, passing Jeff Wolfert (2006-08).
The Bulldogs tallied field goals in each of the last two quarters, though, including the game-winner with 2:43 left, to pull out the win.
Mizzou concludes its two-game road trip next Saturday afternoon at Vanderbilt, and returns to Faurot Field on Thursday, Nov. 5, when the Tigers host Mississippi State.
