COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou men's basketball team dropped a home contest, 67-47, to Ole Miss on Saturday at Mizzou Arena. With 14 points, sophomore Johnathan Williams, III led the team in scoring for the ninth time in 2014-15 as the Tigers fell to 7-14 (1-7) on the season.
Mizzou needed a balanced effort to stay within striking distance throughout the afternoon. Nine different players found the scoring column for head coach Kim Anderson's squad.
Savvy senior guard Keith Shamburger spread the wealth, dishing out six assists without committing any turnovers in 36 minutes of action. Shamburger's efficient 4.6 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks second in the Southeastern Conference. As a team, the Tigers only turned the ball nine times, marking the third time they had less than 10 turnovers during the 2014-15 campaign.
In the post, Williams added a team-high seven rebounds. Fellow big man Keanau Post helped Mizzou get out to a start strong. Post scored the Tigers' first two baskets and ripped down three rebounds in the opening two minutes of the game.
Within the first 10 minutes of game clock, there were seven lead changes as the two squads traded buckets early. With Ole Miss leading 10-8, sophomore guard Wes Clark followed a jumper by burying a three-pointer to hand the Tigers a 13-12 advantage. The Rebels responded with a 10-2 run and built a 37-25 lead at halftime.
In the second frame, the Tigers' defensive intensity allowed them to cut Ole Miss' lead to nine with a little more than 11 minutes remaining. The Rebels only made one field goal in 11 attempts over a nine-minute span. After a transition tip-in from forward Ryan Rosburg, Shamburger found a trailing Clark for a trey to slice Ole Miss' lead to 46-37.
After a timeout, the Rebels halted the Mizzou comeback and raced out to a commanding lead to close the game.
The Tigers now head to Alabama to take on the Crimson Tide. Tip off on SEC Netowrk in Tuscaloosa, Ala., is slated for 8 p.m. CT. For all the latest on Mizzou men's basketball, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MizzouHoops.
