COLUMBIA, Mo. – Day one at the Mizzou Invite in Kansas City proved to be successful for the Mizzou Tennis squad. Play kicked off at 8:30 a.m. with Mizzou facing off against Penn State in doubles. Matches were moved indoors to the Overland Park Racquet Club due to rain.
Mizzou swept the first round of doubles quick and easy. Senior Kelli Hine and junior Bea Machado Santos highlighted the dominant session by only dropping one game as the No. 2 pairing.
With no time to celebrate, the Tigers had a quick turnaround for their second round of doubles against Louisville. Freshman Turner Yates and sophomore Clare Raley sealed their first victory together as a team with a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles. Mizzou was 4-2 through the first two rounds of doubles play. Yates also picked up her first career singles victory, downing Penn State's Hannah Kratky, 8-0 in a pro-set.
Hine, currently ranked No. 89 in the pre-season ITA rankings, defeated Nebraska's No. 1 Maggy Lehmicke 6-2, 6-2. Santos and Raley also had successful outings in their first singles matches for Mizzou, sealing wins at the No. 2 and No. 5 spots, respectively.
Mizzou finished the singles session against Nebraska with a 4-3 record behind wins from Hine, Santos, Raley and junior Brittany Lashway. Lashway ended the Tigers' day on a high note with a dramatic, comeback victory over the Huskers' Sydney Harlow. The junior trailed 2-5 in the first set, but battled back to force a tiebreak and claim it 7-6 (6). Lashway eventually polished off the match win with a 6-2 second set.
