AUSTIN, Tx. -- Senior Kearsten Peoples was the first Tiger to qualify for the NCAA Championships on Thursday (May 28), highlighting the first day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Round with her sixth-place finish in the women's hammer. Nine of the 24 Tigers that qualified for this weekend's competition saw action on Thursday. Three will return for the quarterfinals in their respective events on Friday, while Peoples will be back in the ring for the discus and shot put on Friday and Saturday, respectfully.
The NCAA East and West Preliminary Rounds are both run this weekend, with Jacksonville, Fl., hosting the east region and Austin, Tx., the west. Qualifiers for the two meets are based on the top 48 ranked individuals in each event. The top 12 finishers in each event out of each of the two meets this weekend will advance on to the NCAA Championships at the historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., from June 10 -- 13.
Despite weather delays pushing the start time back almost two hours, senior Kearsten Peoples was able to stamp her ticket to Eugene in the hammer throw, finishing sixth in the competition. It was a tough competition, though, as she sat in the dreaded 13th position up until her final throw when she let loose a toss of 63.13m (207-1), moving her well into qualification.
Peoples will return to the ring on Friday, joining fellow-senior Jill Rushin in the discus competition. This will be the first of two events that they will have together, as they are slated to close the weekend with the shot put on Saturday.
Three other Tigers will also return to competition on Saturday, as sophomore LaQuisha Jackson and juniors Markesh Woodson and Will Crocker all qualified for the quarterfinals in their respective events. Jackson was the first up out of the three, clinching the final spot in the next round of the 100m dash with a 11.49 (wind-aided) finish.
Woodson will also retake the blocks in the 100m dash after he crossed for an automatic qualification into Saturday, finishing second in his heat with a final time of 10.14 (wind-aided).
Crocker had a busy day, starting with the 1500m run and ending with an exciting performance in the 800m, where he crossed in 1:50.04 to move on into Friday.
Events at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Tx., will resume on Friday, starting with the women's discus competition at noon CT. For the latest on your Tigers, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
